fuel filter canister leaking

99 2500 cummins. Fuel is leaking at the fuel heater and i read that you can replace the o-ring to stop the leak, just wondering how difficult that is and how effective that fix is.

I let mine continue to leak (since it only leaked when the heater was on) which was a big mistake. The constant dripping on the starter toasted it.

Did mine back in August when I had to replace the lift pump.

I did not cut the wires though. I removed the wires from the plug so they would snap back in when finished.

The toughest part for me was finding the correct size o-ring. I went to Napa, O'Reilly, ACE hardware, Orscheln farm and home store... nothing would allow the heater plug to slide back into the canister header even coating with oil. Next day went to a local CAT dealer with the old o-ring. 5 minutes and one dollar later I was on my way. For what it's worth, the o-ring I got from CAT was purple color.

Not a drop since and no more mess.
