I have been following the forums on fuel boxes for quite a while. It really looks like individual taste for power and upgrades.

My question is what box is best to achieve an increase in mpg and not power. I really don't need any more power but want to increase fuel mileage. If power increases so be it.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Give us some more particulars on your truck, that would help. Do you have an auto or manual tranny? Stock truck, or have you done some modifications? Are you towing? Gear ratio? 4x4 or 4x2? Do you have cap/topper? What is your mpg presently?

As far as a box and better mileage, don't know. My mileage has dropped due to boxes and heavy right foot. I need to have my doctor look at it, my foot.

If you are stock, I would start with upgrading your air intake, a ScottyAir or AFE. Then the exhaust, a 4 inch system with a more free flow muffler will help. Also, being in Reno, you are running winter blend fuel, this will cost you about 2 mpg. I don't know if this is your first diesel or not, just thought I would throw the winter fuel thing in, as it makes a difference.

I agree w/ localnet.
Don't be fooled by claims of higher mpg w/ these boxes. They throw the overhead off and it's nice to believe that it's true but mine right now says 20mpg and I know that it's really 16-17mpg. Some people claim increases but most say theirs stayed the same or dropped..

With the TST and Edge EZ I gained 2.5 mpg, this is hand figuered not the overhead. There alot of guys getting better mpg with this combo!

Your driving habits and environment will also play a huge role in your milege.

Long drives on pool-table flat roads might see gains, where stop & go traveling up and down hills will not.

In those conditions turn the box way up on the settings, that way you are able to drive it with a light foot and mpg's will be better.

On the 04 we have in the shop, the Banks Six-Gun gained 1-1.5mpg which as good or better than any of the boxes we tried.

If you set the tst on timing only and run 72 on the highway expect a .75-1.25 mpg gain. I rarely use my box except for longer trips on the highway because i have not seen any gains in town or in daily driving. The box on timing alone will make your egt's slightly cooler but the downside is the timing knock will make your engine sound like something is wrong at certain rpm's. There is a real difference in power on timing alone no doubt about it. I do not know the long term effect the tst will have on the engine if running day in and day out, thats why I only use it at certain times and turn it back off. Waiting for some results from guys with over a 100k before I am fully trusting that no harm is done to the engine over the long haul. I am too cautious i guess. I bought the tst for added power to pass someone or run through the gears quickly at times and to put a hop in my step and hoped the timing would help with fuel mileage. It will put a smile on your face and give slight mpg improvement, but one tends to forget about mileage when he is pinned to the back of the seat when the power and torque fueling curves overlap.

I have had my diesel for about 1 1/2 years and two winters now. I have a 4x4 with no camper, all stock parts and an auto tranny. Right now I can barely get 17 on the Highway and about 14-15 in town. I drive with a very light foot to conserve on the fuel. It does not seem to matter too much on which routes I drive. The sierra mountains don't help the mileage thought!

TST has been one showing up quite a bit and I talked to them about their box. They claim you don't have to change air or exhaust parts?

Banks seems to be well engineered and very safety oriented of course with a price tag!

Because the EGT backdown feature will save you...
But you will be hitting it often I bet

Most boxes will get you 1-2mpg due to increased efficiency. But if you have the hammer down forget about it

Well, I can tell you that I have gone a week without putting the hammer down and driving like a Grampa (no offense to some of you) and it did not help my mileage recover except for maybe .5 mpg..

I am surprised that there isn't more marketing directed towards fuel economy improvements. Everyone that asks me questions about these trucks wants to know the best way to improve the fuel economy. Especially with the 610 motors, due to the retarded (literally) timing for decreased emissions.

It I could buy a 2-3MPG improvement for 6-800 dollars, it would be sold.
