fuel additives

What is a quality fuel additive for cleaning out the old fuel system? I am not starting a brand war, just wondering if the STP stuff at the local mini-mart will hold up to my high standards as beeing a quality product, or just another form of snake oil. Any data support would be great.

Re:fuel additives

I would only use additives that are designed for diesels. Examples are Powerservice, Shell Rotella DFA, Stanadyne, Lucas and others. Not only do these additives clean injectors they also lubricate as well.

Re:fuel additives

All I ever put in my tank, besides diesel fuel, Is a little, about 4 oz. of transmission fluid in every 4th or fifth tank of diesel fuel. It also cleans and lubricates. I have two tanks on my truck. Original tank and a 24 gal. aux. tank, so I use a little trany fluid about once a month.

Ive heard that using tranny fluid is not good....are you talking about ATF?? I believe the friction modifiers etc. are not good to use in your fuel system - probably be better off using a fuel additive or just fresh motor oil for extra lubrication

Re:fuel additives

I don't like using additives except on rare occasions when there's a huge temperature difference. Like going from FL/GA to MT high country. Non-alcohol/methanol types work the best and still keep the injectors from getting additional crud in/thru them. Stanadyne is the choice product. Some Cummins dealers sell it, but you can buy it from Flying J, Petro or TA truck stops.

Same here, and I don't smell diesel after filling my tank, just the Stanadyne.

Re:fuel additives

I've tried a few additives, especially is hot weather, and found a new product called Synergen (sp?) 20+ Cetan to be the best. I add it about every third fillup, or a little to each tank if I'll hauling. It comes from a company in Durant OK. The only place I have found it is at some O'rielly parts stores here in the Dallas area.

Re:fuel additives

A large number of companies have spent more than a few dollars for R&D on fuel additives....call me crazy, but isnt that the best thing to put into your tank??? ATF, motor oil or other lubricants may be helpful, but I dont see any reason to use them over a fuel additive specifially for diesels.
