Front End Rattle

I've got a front end rattle on my 05, and it isn't the kind we all love. It sounds like a rattling chain, or a dogs choke collar shaking. It's not constant, doesn't happen at idle, and only when moving 15 mph or more. I don't think it's coming from the Cummins, as the only time I'll hear it related to engine sound (didn't want to say "noise") is when stopped and I bring it up to 1700 rpms. I'm guessing the vibration of the Cummins is what will cause it then. No leaks and nothing visible I could see.

The sound isn't consistant and hitting bumps doesn't change it. It doesn't sound like a loose shock, but more like a bad ujoint. That type of metal sound. I haven't been on the highway since noticing it, so I'm not sure if it does it in 5th or 6th, but will do it in the other four gears, i.e. not tranny related.

Any ideas? I've got an appointment with a local dealer tomorrow. Hopefully it's something minor as the less a dealer touches my truck, the happier I'll be.

TIA.

If you can hear it while setting still I would say that it would more than likely be engine related. I would take the intake apart and look at the blades on the turbo and see if they are hitting anywhere, like a bearing or somthing went bad. Just my .02 . The only other thing I can think that might make the sound you describe is a idler tension pullley, maybe the spring went south.

I did hear something the other morning, that sounded like the blades were hitting something. I thought it sucked in a small animal. It stopped, and I was less than a mile from work, so I opened the hood with it running and everything seemed normal.

I took a good look at the serpentine and pulley and that looked fine, too. That's the first thing I thought of, as Britt and Wexman had issues with that.

Since it's new, I called a local dealer and it's there now. I'll update this as soon as I hear something.

I put some nerf bars on that required loosening the rubber
cab mounts, now the friggen truck squeaks when going thru my yard.I traced it down to the right rear one, I put some lube on it, and it stopped for a couple days, but now it squeaks again, it's driven me nuts.

Dropped the truck off yesterday and didn't hear anything today by 4 pm, so I called. They couldn't hear the noise. Surprise, surprise. They want me to go for a ride with one of their techs and point it out.

"They did notice a bracket for the fan shroud was broken so we ordered one for it. It will be here tomorrow if you want it fixed then" the service writer said.

Did they think the noise might be coming from a shroud that wasn't secured? Apparently not.

This would certainly explain why it wouldn't do it while stopped unless the engine was brought up to 1700 rpms.

I'll be picking it up tommor after work. I'm using my mom-in-laws Subaru. Peppy little thing, but talk about a moving crumple zone. Maybe it's just me, but more people have been pulling out in front of me since I picked it up.

I picked up the mighty Cummins after their service dept closed so I couldn't talk to anyone. I called earlier in the day and asked them to lock my keys and the receipt in the truck, which they did.

As I posted, they found the fan support bracket broken. Here's what they replaced: one support F 9043003 and one coolant C 1081004 covered under warranty.

I couldn't hear the noise on the way home so hopefully, that's what was causing the noise.

I had/have a similar symptom. The dealer called today and said it was some type of tensioner. I only really notice it at idle. Does this sound like the culprit? I thought it was internal to the engine. Thanks.

Here are a few threads you might want to read:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ight=tensioner

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ghlight=pulley

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ghlight=pulley

You might be the first 06 owner to have this. On this site anyway.

It's not you! It happens all the time to me when driving my Passat instead of my Dodge. Sheesh.

Do you find yourself looking at vehicles coming towards you and saying to yourself "Boy, if he crossed the solid line and hit me head on I'd be dead."

Doesn't happen when I'm in the wife's Volvo, but the infrequent times I'm in anything else it does.

Every morning when I first start the truck I hear a screech or squeal coming from the fan somewhere. Stops after I drive it at all. Before the dealer fried my PCM, they were supposed to fix it. They replaced the FCM, front control module which was causing my reverse lights not to work. Reverse lights were fixed but noise on start-up still there. Hopefully this takes care of it. This is day 24 in the shop since early Feb. If this doesn't fix my issues I will look at the Lemon Law. Chrysler did make my truck payment though. I give them props for that. Later.
