Smile Front Axles...?

Hi guys

Still researching what year dodge I am going to go with , I am leaning toward a 97 dually or a 2002 duelly .... It's really hard for me to leave anything alone ... I love to tinker , so for me to buy a new truck is not out of the possablitys , but I figure if I get a little older truck like a 2002 , leaves a little more spending money for improvements .

My question is about the front axles , from the reading I have been doing on your site 2002 was the last year for dana ...I really like dana ...lots of parts out there .
My question are the dodge front axle's always spinning the front axles ...I did see some where , I think dynatrac the conversion , I would figure you would get a little better fuel mileage not turning those hubs .

Thanks guys

Greg

Yes, 2002 was the last year they used the Dana axles. I know at least for my truck (built march of 02) both the front axles turn & the front driveshaft, so that for sure hurts mileage. Some other folks have posted that it was for a limited production time that the front drive shaft turned. My brothers 99' does not, but the axles do.

All 2nd gens with the exception of the 02.5's had a vacuum operated center axle disconnect system that splits the passenger side inner shaft into 2 pieces and stops the ring and pinion and front shaft from spinning in 2WD.....only the spiders and side gears spin. The 02.5's eliminated the CAD so the entire front driveline will spin in 2WD.

What system did the 02.5 go to to join the axle's? I thought it was the CAD as well?

No "system" used on the 02.5's.....the CAD was simply eliminated.
