Friend has issues
I'm posting this for a friend cause she's not a member. Truck is a 97 4x4 5spd with 220k on the clock. Stone stock. She said that when the truck first fires up when it's cold out that a little over 1000rpm it makes a noise that sounds like a hum. Sorta like a slick metal rolling on metal noise. I know diddly squat about the 12v's other than how to make them fast so any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Also, she's got a slight fuel leak around her fuel filter canister. Happened after she changed the filter. She said it's coming out from around the drain on it. Any ideas? I haven't had time to look at any of this so I can't give yall a much better description.
Thanks yall

hm, I get a noise from around the drivers side of the motor sometimes. Sounds like a hum or whine. I havent been able to figure out what it is but I suspect its the injection pump. If my IP goes belly up that will just make the decision to upgrade that much easier
I think theres new o-rings that come with those fuel filters for the top and bottom where the WIF sender is. Id just replace them and see if the leak stops.

Serpantine belt and powersteering would be my first guesses. As far as the fuel leak , i beleive there is an O ring in the vacinity of the fuel drain on a 97 that can spring a leak.

I know you are down in TX blue, so I'm not sure your "cold" means cold . but when it got cold up here, before I switched to synthetic power steering fluid, it would moan until it warmed up. It did this in my 1st gen truck too.

It's been said but yeah the power stering fluid. Probably makes the same sound as if you were running low on fluid and turning the stering wheel. Mine would do that last year a little when cold but over the summer I changed the booster and fluid, now no more sound. Leak, check O'ring. Good luck.

Talked to her again tonight. She said it's starting to get louder and last longer. I'll try and give it a listen tomorrow evening before dinner and give yall a better idea. I appreciate the ideas.

One more suggestion!!!!
If its a hum, on the left side might give the starter a listen. with 220K on the truck the contacts could be going. change them out to the heavy duty ones, not hard to due. The top bolt is the one that will try to discourage you from doing this task. Not much leverage, and a tight place to get too, and did i mention tight?
