ford transmission
Someone just asked me if the transmission off of a 1986 ford diesel will fit on a 1989 ford diesel. I do not know much about the fords so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re:ford transmission
The 86 is a four speed while the 89 is a five speed you should be able to swap in the four speed but I think you will need to use the flywheel and clutch from the 86 with the four speed in 89 they used a dual mass flywheel and I am not sure if it will work with a four speed but the flywheel from a 6.9 will bolt right to a 7.3 you might want to check overall length as well the five speed might be longer requireing driveline changes. Re:ford transmission
sorry I was tired when I read this thread. Was a decade ahead of myself. E4OD came out in '88, an '86 would have a C6 tranny, also a 6.9 diesel, 7.3 IDI started in '88. I believe the old 4 speed "barnyard" trannys were cast iron, 2 piece bell housing. Don't know about the flywheel, but the '88 had a dual mass flywheel, expensive new, but with an old girl like that someone must have one kicking around. Also '86 to'89 is a different body style. Tranny hole might be in a different location in the floor (minor). Make sure both have a mechanical slave, as the newer Fords had a hydraulic external slave. (i believe '92 and up?) Firewalls crack on those old trucks due to the leverage on the clutch pedal also Sorry about the mixup in years
