Angry Flickering Daytime Running Lites (DRL's)

I just had this rig about 2 weeks and noticed yesterday that when I was behind a shiney new truck, my Daytime Running Lights were faintly flickering. I pulled on the headlites and quickly turned them off and the flickerin stopped, but then started again after few seconds.

I tested the battery voltage, steady. The parking brake switch is clean and working fine. I also pulled the DRL plug and cleaned it but it didn't help..

Do I need a new relay/controller or is there something else to check??

Find and clean the ground straps. Seems as though no matter how tight the ground bolt is , crud gets in between strap and ground point. I had a flickering problem with my old truck. That fixed mine.

Was the truck completely warmed up? If not, the "problem" could well be cycling grid heaters.

Well I have owned a Cummins engine in various trucks for about 7 years now, so no its not the heaters..

I will try the grounds, the batteries are fresh as are the connections but the frame connections could be suspect. My thoughts were that if the voltage at the batteries is steady, then the PCM is seeing a good ground too. But Dodge and Electrical systems aren't good in my last couple of rigs.

Thanks guys. I do suspect the Module though

Well I think its the module now..

I did some scrubbing on the ground connections, but to no avail..

Now I installed the PIAA Extreme's I had in my other truck and they don't flicker anymore.. Now they turn on and off!!! I was wondering why people are buckling thier seatbelts and slowing down...

So its the module.. I just have to look to see which wire to cut or ground on the module to disable it. I would rather that than just ground the parking brake wire and have the lite on all the time.

I can't find my Chiltons manual with the wiring diagrams for wire color, so voltmeter ho!!!

If you just disconnect the DRL module your headlights will work as normal non-DRL type lights, thats how I have mine right now. The only problem is that your high beam indicator light on the dash will not work. If you are looking for the wiring diagram for the DRL, AlpineRam has posted a good diagram of the DRL module plug in at least two previous posts. Try a search.

Thanks Sidewinder, I will do that search pronto.

I can do without the high beam indicator for a little while. I really don't know how much those things cost to replace.. The fine for not having DRL is about $57, and the local cops would watch you after you get the first ticket I am sure.

Haven't been hassled yet on mine and I've been DRL free for over a year and a half now.

I found the post by AlpineRam with the pinout..

TomW, did you jumper the two pins at the cable for the highbeam indicator?

I read the post a little further and I see you don't have the factory DRL harness. Thanks for the boost of confidence anyway, but we have our own town cops.

"Is that you Andy???"
