Question Fleetguard Venturi Combo Filter for 5.9 CTD?

Does anyone know if there is a Venturi Combo filter that will fit our 5.9 engines? The filter would end up being longer than the LF16035, but there should be room for it.

It would be really nice to have a built-in bypass filter.

That sounds interesting. Give Fleetguard a call and see what they say.

No, the Venturi combos are just for the larger engines. I believe ISC and above.

I had someone tell me that the LF9028 (Venturi Combo for Kubota) will fit and work on the 5.9 CTD. I did a search, and someone on Carson Dodge's forum said they have been running it (about 11/06). I'm haven't registered there, so I couldn't see if they had posted a follow-up since November.

That filter may physically fit but you would be decreasing the amount of regular filter material and may have to shorten your service interval. Also, the Venturi Combo filter are designed around a certain oil flow and pressure drop for each application. You may not be getting benefits from the change.
That filter may be for Carrier refrigeration units with a Kubota engine from the one instance on the internet.

The filter is the same diameter, but like 30% longer. I think they just added the bypass filter section. There might be a difference in pressure drop, but I would think the worst case would be the filtering efficiency and flow is the same.

Venturi Combo

I contacted Fleetguard Technichal and they said that they are working on one for the Dodge Cummins but that it will be next year if at all. I asked about the one that was quoted as fitting and they said that they had heard that that info was going around but that it was bad info due to the fact that the bypass would take to much away from the full flow for the Dodge Cummins engine. They said they have been working on the problem but have not yet got it resolved. It would be great if they do get one out but after what they said I sure am not going to try the Kubota one.

Sorry for the length of reply.

I'd decided to contact Fleetguard too, to see if the LF9028 would work. As they told me, the LF9028 should work, of course, there is the caveat that Dodge has not approved the filter, so no warranty. It's a really good idea. Too bad it has to be approved by Dodge.

It's not like I want to go beyond the service intervals; I just want to filter out more of the nasty particles without spending hundreds of $$$ on a bypass kit.

Here's the email chain:

Tony, we do offer the LF9028 that is designed for the ISB Cummins engines, for Kubota and Carrier(OEM). Dodge has not ask for a Venture Combo for the pick up truck applications. However, the length and OD is very close on the LF3972 and the LF9028, so there should not be a issue on the size of the LF9028. The LF9028 should perform on the ISB engines in the Dodge Rams a they do on the Kubota and Carrier applications. However, Dodge may not cover the warranty on the LF9028, since they did not approve the use of this filter.

If I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Are there plans to make a Venturi Combo filter for the 5.9 CTD in Dodge Rams? Would the existing LF9028 fit (and work)?

Where are you getting the filter dimensions from? From Cumminsfiltration, the filter is the same size as the stock filter and is not longer. Did you get the filter yet? Did you check out what the original application is? You may be able to get a different oil filter head and use Venturi Combo filters. If you look up the filters for an ISB07, LF3970 is listed. This has 1 &1/8-16 threads. LF9667 is the filter that matched this thread size and is longer.

Yeah, I was looking at the wrong filter when I looked up the dimensions.

Haven't got the filter yet. No one nearby carries it, so I would have to order a whole case.

I wouldn't really want to change the oil filter head. I originally was asking if anyone knew of a filter that fit our engines. I should have also asked if anyone has run any of these [on our engine]. Since I don't know if they'll work, I don't want to be the test dummy.

I did some research on the Fleetguard site and found that the LF9028 venturi combo filter is basicly the same size as the LF16035. It is the same heigth, is 3.69 diameter instead of 3.68 and they both have 1-16 UN-2B threads. I was concerned about a possible flow rate difference so I e-mailed Fleetguard and received a reply that the LF9028 has the same flow rate (8.72 CFM) as the LF16035 (stratapour). It was designed for a "ISB, 5.9L, 24 Valve (non Dodge application" for Kubota and Carrier applications.

It is a combo of a regular filter and a bypass filter in one. I just question its use as Cummins filteration doesn't have Venturi Combo filters listed for the Dodge version of the Cummins or the regular ISB in highway vehicles. The ISC is the first of the series with applications listed.

As noted by FarmerJim, it does have an ISB application. It's just not for Dodge.

Having a built-in bypass filter would be nice if Dodge would approve it.
