Fix the throttle cable recall on your own?

I just broke my throttle cable today due to fraying on the steel cable. I typed in the Vin and it shows that the recall 970 was never performed does anyone know if you can just get the parts from the dealer and fix it yourself?
The reason I ask is that I just pulled the motor out which would make it a little difficult to get to the dealer.

I need to do mine also and i'm dead set against bringing it to the dealer. Im pretty sure i read someones post that said you could purchase the kit from the dealer for $30.00

If I can, I would rather pay the $30 and do it myself than have the dealer do it for free!

The dealer will not give you the parts under the recall for free , you would have to buy them.

I called today and no they will not let you install the parts on your own. On the positive side the kit is only $26 which I didn't think was bad for a stealers price on parts.

Update...

Ok boys, here's the lowdown on the throttle cable recall on the 94-96 CTD...

I needed the recall done but I was dead set against having them do it, even for free!

So, I called the dealer and asked if I could just buy the parts for the recall. There response was the same as above "we have to install the parts, you'll have to bring the truck in".

After a while, I did a few internet searches and found a bunch of info on the (recall #970). I then found the part # for the cable itself (4897406AA) I called the dealer and it had to be ordered for $47.85

I then did a little more looking and found a part # that was the whole recall kit that the service department uses for the recall. So, I call back the parts counter and say "I'm looking for part # CANZ9700".

Now get this, this part # CANZ9700 contains not only the cable #4897406AA (that was $47.85) but it also contains 3 throttle rod ball studs, ball sockets, nuts and the return spring! now heres the killer...

The part # CANZ9700 with the cable and everthing was only $19.00 and it was in stock! so I hurried my **** down to the dealer before they figured out what I was doing and bought the whole shabang for $19.00

The only thing I can think of is the parts counter is supposed to sell the kit to the service department for $19.00?

So, before they figure out whats going on, If you are like me and want to install it yourself get the kit and do it yourself. By the way I already installed the cable so it is the right one!

Thumbs up repair it yourself

Great post Timmy22

If you have not gotten a recall notice for a problem (example throttle cable) and you have it repaired out of your pocket and can produce the documentation for it they (d-c) should refund your expense. In other words all you should need is a receipt from your buddys garage and you can fix it yourself !

no go, has to be your local 5 Star dealership. Not just an ASE certified shop.

The throttle rod for the 97 is a different recall than the cable for the 96. I had mine done at the dealer. Totally convinced the mech that the 5500 was a truck sold at their dealership, one of 500 built to test the market.

Timmy the recall notice i got on my 96 1/2 ton gasser right from chrysler for the loose cat convertor says right in black and white if i already had to make the repair and pay for it prior to notification about it that i would be refunded my expense. I would think the same would apply here the key being (repaired before you received a recall notice from D_C)
I have not gotten a notice on my 94 yet have you ?

Not trying to start anything just puting out information as you are again great research you did on the repair and parts these are the things that make this site the best there is

DC did the same on the transmission cooler line recall for the gassers. Both hoses were around $125 and the recall kit was around $65

Ok so I did some looking on dodgeram.org and this is correct the 97 has a throttle recall #B15. Anyone have any parts info on this recall? dodgeram.org says it just replaces the ball studs and sockets. I would much rather fix this my self and I don't care if I have to pay for the part, just don't want to take my truck to the ***********.

Thanks....Josh

What's wrong with the dealer? If they say ok, I'm gonna take my truck in to fix both my recalls (brakes and cable).
