The ISX 385 ST with SmartTorque offers a Cummins-designed torque-management rating that delivers an additional 100 lb-ft of torque in the top two gears of the transmission automatically – over and above the standard rating. The ISX 385 ST keeps downshifts to a minimum on the open road, delivering optimum performance no matter the run.

That’s a long way from the old 235 Detroit and 220 Cummins that we used to have.( yeah I know I’m old) :'( I’d have to learn to drive all over again. Almost had to when I went from 12 valve to 24valve.

Yes sir I thought I was on top of the world when I drove my first 350. Until I got to drive a 380 Cat. I still think that was the best motor I ever had more power than a fright train and would walk up most hills without downshifting. Now I have that much HP in my dodge … well close

The only thing good about driving a quadruplex was that you did not have to worry about anyone wanting to use your truck when theirs was down for repairs. ;D( how come you got that other stick in there) It was also good if you enjoyed shifting and listening to the truck growl. Not only would them old things pull good they would run like a spotted ape too.

Best part of that was, I could leave it clean on Friday and know it would be clean on Monday.That was until I got the Peterbilt 379 extended hood, 425 cat, 15 speed, all polished budds,tanks. That was a nice ride 8)

I just had a 48 model Mack rig given to me by a friend. It is if good shape body wise and needs some engine work but ran when parked 5 years ago.Only bad thing is it has a Gas engine :'(.<br>DM01

I **** sure remember mine. Get half way through them and have to stop to find a gear

Shifting them wasn't so bad once you understood the rules and the principles behind all them gears.The low gear in the compound transmission was only to be used offroad so that just left lowsplit,direct and highsplit to worry about.I was young and stubborn back in those days and set pretty high standards for myself so I was shifting with both hands holding the wheel with my knee,(you know how it went) and could time my shifts so you could hardly ever tell the difference between my splits and just the normal shift in the compound.<br>Mack made some great transmissions and the shift rails had grease fittings on them which most drivers never knew about but if you greased those shift rails when you greased everything else they would shift pretty slick.<br>I graduated from an Autocar with a 5X4 in it to the Macks so I have paid my dues.My background was in construction,mostly mixer and dump truck so it was hard to go fast enough to stay cool with those 54 MPH rearends we had.<br>When Mack broke new ground with the Maxidyne in the late '60's I was ecstatic!!!Just to think that all that handshaking with those two shift levers had been reduced to 5 forward gears,well,they did have another stick for a low gear but you could only use it in first and reverse and the bark of that straight pipe announcing 237 horses at my command was heavenly!!!<br>Of course Mack had graduated to the new cab style and the ventilation was outstanding compared to the B models and that helped as well.We only had a couple B-61's....We used B-81's mostly and when the new cabs came out we went with the DM-800's and bought a few DM-600's for our dumptrailers.<br>Those old Macks can run forever but with the new weight laws they are just not profitable any more.We have Macks now where I work but they are Mack in name only,they are built light and long wheelbase and all the attributes that made a Mack a Mack are just not there any more.I run equipment most of the time but when I have to drive dump truck I always take the oldest one when I can,I like it better.It is a DM-600sx and much better than those new RD models.The RD's are pretty but they can't do the work!!!)

Y’all are right them old trucks were hot. But the one that I drove had a roof mount, add on AC unit on it at one time. But it had been taken off for repair and never put back on so I had good ventilation that doubled as a shower when it was raining. ;D There I was 18years old and I thought I was a big time driver. Did not realize that the only reason I was even allowed to drive it was that no one else was that big of a fool. <br><br>But that old thing would come up out of them rock pits pulling 120,000 to 130,000 without complaining or breaking anything.At that time the only thing I new was load the wagon.<br><br>Was painted street dept yellow with city decals, the DOT would wave me on and stop the next truck behind me that did not have over 75,000 GVW, don’t forget that in those days the max WT you could have was 72,500. <br>

Got my class 3 pdl w/airbrakes AND went from a c-60w/366 gas to a real truck.. 1966 White Mustang, 180 cummins 5x4 Spicer. Ugly old ratty mixer, but hot **** I's a truck driver now. 42mph wide open w/2 mile flat road run. But it taught me to drive, maintain and manage momentum. Made a trip for a friend last month 98 KW T800 400 Cummins 13spd. A guy can be lazy and dumb with that kind of power. If they'd been that nice when I quit trucking, I likely wouldn't have quit trucking. Drove a B61 gas Mack too, 5x3, armstrong steering . In a mixer no less. sure was fun in the soft construction sites. Those were the days NOT ;D Rick
