a lot of people tend to do there first one around the 2,000-3,000 mile mark just to get all the material out of there left over from the machining process. I didn't do mine untill 6,000 becuase i didn't know any better. no problems since and that was on my 03. i still do every 6,000-7,000 mile changes

I've had several reliable people tell me that these engines are not brand spankin new anymore when we get 'em like they used to be. I'm told that Cummins runs 'em, does performance tests etc, then drains the oil to get any metal shavings or anything else out. When we drive 'em off the lot the engine has already been somewhat broke in (obviously plenty more breakin in to do), and the oil changed once. Don't know for sure that's true...anybody offer anything on this??

If the above is true, there'd be no need to make the first oil change before 7,500 miles, or whatever you decide your regular interval is going to be. 7,500 for me.
