First diesel - what oils??
Earlier this week I purchased my first Cummins in a 2500 and after talking to the original owner (I purchased from dealer online) found that the truck was meticulously maintained, as I suspected. In looking at the oil with over 2,000 mi on it there is no noticable discoloration to it, he advised that it was always changed at about 3,000 and never needed to be added too. He used Delo or Shell, I have always used Amsoil in my other trucks and cars and think I would like to do the same in this one.
If there is any good, bad or ugly whys or why nots about that, I'd appreciate the info. The truck runs great with 141,000miles & I haven't yet loaded it with anything heavy. It passed emissions test in Phx. with flying colors with an allowable opacity of 40 (I think that has something to do with particulates per million), this came in at 6.8 - cool. It turns 2000 rpm at 75mph with auto/OD and has 4.10 limited slip rear, with a US Gear splitter, that seems ok to me, but what do I know? If anybody can send me whatever, thanks again. Jeff 8) 8)

All the oils you mentioned are fine, if you want to spend the extra $$$ for Amsoil, go for it. I assume you're not going to follow his ridiculously short oil change schedule? I also hope you won't go the other way and run the Amsoil indefinitely without analysis. I'm running Delvac 1300s for 5k, FWIW.

First off let me say welcome to the site. 3,000 is a bit earley on an oil change but it's your truck. If it makes you happy go for it. Oh don't use fram oil filters. Fleet guard and the steeler's oil filters. If you have any questions just ask.
Sounds like you got a great truck. Enjoy. -Anthony

Re:First diesel - what oils??
Thanks for the replies guys. I have usually used Baldwin or Wix filters and expect that both make one for this truck, no problems there right? I have good access to them and they both have had good reputations in the industrial applications that I am more familiar with.
Also, has anybody changed the cat-back exhaust system to some of the aftermarket ones available and found any benefit? Thanks, Jeff

Both are of good reputation. The fleet at work runs Baldwin with no problems, I'm running Donaldson because that's what the local truck parts store carries. I think as long as you avoid Fram and anything with a flimsy can (Purolater comes to mind), you'll be fine.
My truck's no faster after the mufflerectomy, but it sounds cooler. ;D
