How much did they pay you for doing their job for them? It was pretty much the same story at my dealership. They said there was no such thing until I waved that page of the Owner's Manual in their faces. Even then the salesman had to get involved to make it happen. We spent more time "arguing" about it than it took to do it, ugh!

it was free- have them perform ( i believe) tsb 18-004-04 for poor cab heat. while doing this tsb, the tech follows a couple of steps and enables your high idle feature.

What is the purpose for High Idle? Are youable to maintain a normal idle when wanted?

It enables you to idle the engine up when parked. I believe you set the parking break, turn cruise control on and hit set...then you use the accel / decel button to raise or lower the rpm's for faster warm ups.

no need to set parking brake.( you obviously have to be in park, though) as soon as you depress the brake pedal, idle goes back down to normal or as stated earlier, you can use the decel button.

I wish it could be enabled on a manual. It would be nice in the winter to have it.

My 2003 manual shift automatically went into high idle depending on the outside air temp. I haven't been in any cold climate with my 04.5 to see if it does the same. However, you could not raise or lower the idle speed...it was automayically controlled to rev higher or lower depending on outside temps.

I understand that part and it hasn't been cold enough for it to kick in yet. It would be nice though to enable a high idle when you pull over for a nap in the cold and prevent the engine from cooling to much.

2003/2500

Can someone tell me if the computerized Hi Idle works on the 2003s autos, without using the cruise control feature? If so, could you point me to the procedure for the 2003? My dealer is saying that it can't be done on the 2003s. The dealer mentioned calling the "Star" support line and received confirmation that it can't be done...

Thanks!

The 2003's have the automatic high idle which it goes to when it gets below certain temp (i wanna say 38*F for some reason??) The High idle feature using the cruise control buttons is not available for the 03 models...

what year did the controllable high idle come out. I have an early 04. I do know it goes on when cold out once in a while. If there is a manual over ride to turn it on and turn it faster that would be great.

IIRC it came out on the 04.5s, when they introduced the 600 engine. On these trucks (04.5 and newer, with 48re tran) there are 2 high idle features: one is the automatic high idle that idles the truck up based on intake air temps that the user has no control over. The other is user settable using the cruise buttons. It has to be activated by a dealer using the code machine. Once it is activated, you can idle the truck up to 1400 rpm using the cruise buttons regardless of outside temperature.

I had mine done a month ago its a good feature but the reason i got from a diesel mechanic is that diesel engines should not idle for extended periods because at idle the turbo does not get a sufficient supply of oil.
