Finally drove my new 96 CTD home

I purchased this truck a couple weeks ago and drove it home tonight. Anyways, heres the dirt

96 12V CTD
Auto Tranny
Extended Cab
Long Bed
4x4
151,000 miles

I bought the truck for $7000. However it did have the following problems

Track Bar (ball joints and steering box are good though)
Axle Seal
Rear shocks
Driverside Door lock solonoid works but got disconnected when someone locked the keys int he car and had to jimmy it

Thats the easy stuff. Then there is the issue of the tranny. It WILL NOT shift to first until I am at a complete stop. It also likes to get stuck on shifts. I called Goering tranny and Dave told me to replace the governor selonoid and governor sensor. I am going to try that tomorrow. If it doesnt work I am putting in the 5 speed nv4500 that I have laying around.

When the truck is in first from a dead stop I am rather dissapointed until the turbo spools at about 1500rpm. Is there anyway to get a little more pep out of this thing? I am going to put in gauges, get rid of the muffler, fuel plate (not sure which one yet), and bring the timing up to 16 degrees. That wont happen for awhile though. Tomorrow I am going to put in a new fuel filter, air filter, and hopefully have the timing checked to make sure it didnt slip. Dont worry I will also be fixin the KDP tomorrow.

It sounds like a sweet truck, and you seem to have a good grasp of how to get more pep out of it. A plate, GSK, and a timing bump would make it a whole new rig. And way more fun to drive. A 10 plate is generally considered the best all around plate, I have a 100, as do many others, and love it.

Is the KDP fixed yet? I bought my 96 a few months ago with 115000 and it was already cracked without me knowing to even look for it. Cost me a few grand to fix.

on your truck, I'd grind the fuel plate down a little, slide it forward, slide the AFC housing forward and loosen the tension on the spring... it'll get down pretty good then

what if you turned up a 94 to 215 specs? would you need gauges?

trust me, I'm all about gauges, but turning up a 180 pump a little bit and pinching off the wastegate, you're going to be lucky to see 1200*

Nice truck! Got a good deal too. I paid $11k for mine with 181k miles. Everything was stock and in good working condition though. Except for the suspension parts...

I wanna say yes, you need them, but you make a good point. I rarely see more than 1200* with mine...

but, what would be the first thing out of yours or my mouth or anyone elses when you here him say, well, Maybe it got to hot,.-DIDNT YOU HAVE ANY GUAGES??? I wouldnt do it, sure when you get a new one, thats the first thing you wana do, is get more power!, I was one of them!, I messed around with mine and drove the crap out of it!, I finally got guages 2 monthes later, and relized,"I need to drive differently!", I just think it is a very good piece of mind knowing where you sit as far as temps and boost!, But thats just me..

I definately agree, I just couldn't stand it on my little 98 auto, so I dove into the pump

I ground the fuel plate into sortof a zero profile, but I only ground it as deep as the deepest point on the factory fuel plate... I slid that full forward and blocked the wastegate. I didn't tow anything, and I doubt it saw over 1100*, but you're right, especially if you're not familiar with how these things make heat, gauges are worth their weight in gold.

I sold the truck before I put gauges on it... current truck has gauges

There is NO doubt that gauges are a requirment before anything is done. I just spent $2000 rebuilding a 12v that I was going to drop into another truck because the guy didnt have gauges. The head gasket popped and melted #6 cylinder because of it. If he had gauges he would have only had a new head gasket, instead he had to sell the motor to me because he couldnt afford the repair bill.

As far as progress on the truck I replaced the governor solenoid and it shifts WAYYY better now. I also replaced the track bar, all brakes, fixed the axle seal leak, had the timing checked and set at stock 12 degrees (until I get gauges), and had the alignment done. Later this week the KDP is going to get fixed because I had a brain fart and forgot to ask the guys doing the timing to check to see if it was fixed yet. Oh yeah earlier today I detailed the entire truck, I work at a dealership detailing cars so I figured why not make my truck look like... well a new truck. I sold the topper for $500 which makes my cost on the truck to this day at $6850 with the new parts I put in it. I am pretty sure I could sell it right now for $12,000 if I wanted to.
