Filters..Fuels..Microns..And Injector Failures

I'm sure that there are alot of ya'll who have already thought about this, but here goes.
During the course of doing an audit on a new Caterpillar 6.6 ACERT engine recently. I started talking to the field follow engineer about the fuel system. Its a CCR (Cat common rail) I asked him if its really a Cat pump, or if it was a Bosch. He said its really a Cat pump. So I quizzed him about the filter requirements. Thats when it got interesting.... He said the fuel system design department is currently working on dual filter set-up that will filter down to 2 micron.
The conversation kinda shifted to fuel quality and those pesky microns.... He said that while sampling fuels and injector failures, they noticed that it wasn't the big round contaminates that seemed to do the most damage, it was the particles that were 3 microns in diameter, but 12 microns long!!!.. He stated that they could pass thru a good quality filter and train wreck a pump or injector. Guess I had never thought about "slivers" just made that assumption about them all being round....
Just a little info
