Thumbs up Field report: MPG's & Rotella T6

I changed from Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40 to Rosmella T6 5w-40.

And guess what, I gained 1-2 MPGs...

How do I know?
I drive almost every Wednesday to my local MX track w/ my dirtbike in the back (which makes difference in aerodynamics). It takes an hour each way and I do this pretty much since I bought the truck. I drive with cruise control at all times (on the highway) at about 65-70 miles an hour according to speedometer (have bigger tires, so add 10% or so..).
I normally get around 17 to 18 MPGs on the same trip. Now, with the new T6 it was 19.8! And trust me, my driving style is very consistent, during the same times and traffic conditions, and I wasn't planning on "setting a new personal MPG record". I just noticed it on the way back and thought: Holy MPGs!

I will post my next UOA....

How bad a Smell are we talking ere??? like - Inthecab stank, or just smells bad on the outside??? I'm about 500 away from an oil change, so I'd be interested in going to 5W-40 Rosmella....

If I have my calculations correct, it will take about 7500 miles of driving getting 1 mpg better with the synthetic 5W40 oil to make up the price difference between the synthetic and conventional oil. This is based on 20 vs 21 mpg and 2.79 diesel and a $50 difference in the price of the 2 oils for the change.

As far a smell, Rotella has a distinct odor that some find offensive. I notice it on my tractor, but can't say that I have noticed in my truck. Others have. Goes away after a while (or I just get used to it).

All temp ranges as per my 2006 owners manual. In mine the graph shows that 15w40 should only be used to zero degrees and for subzero temps to use 5w40 oil. When I tried Rotella 5w40 I only got 1/2 mpg better fuel mileage.

T6 is only an extra $8 per gallon, so that is only an extra $24 per oil change. With the 7500 mile drain interval you would make that up in less than one oil change. The extra cold start protection would be worth it to me. I too am due for a oil change and will be switching over to the 5W-40, it has been showing great UOA on BITOG.

The new t6 Rotella is a full synthetic oil.
I have never had a smell in my truck
from changing oil. I don't understand this.

i just changed and went with Rotella 15-40. I'm still on the first tank so I'm not sure about the mileage claims. However.... i can vouch for the smell. There is definatley a stronger odor with the 15w-40. Maybe next change I'll have the dough for synthetic and can try that out.... My work wife who carpools with me noticed the smell right away...

That is less of a price difference than what I am seeing here. What are you paying for the full syn Rotella?

knc77,

What part of IA are you in? Walmart in Mason City has Rotella Synthetic 5w40 for $23.95 the last time I looked.
