few quick questions for a buddy of mine with 04.5
1. we drilled and tapped his manifold about mid way just in front of where the manifold drops down to the turbo for his pyro. is there any problem with drilling here rather than 3-4" downstream where you get temps from all 6 cylinders than where we drilled and its only reading the front 2-3 cylinders?
2. we also put his trans temp sender in one of the test port plugs on the passenger side rather than splicing into the trans cooler line. how much of a difference is this going to make?
3. he has a smarty on the truck. when he goes above 130hp setting the truck shutters and bucks when in reverse if you give it any kind of throttle. and will a stock trans stand up to the 170hp setting?
thanks guys

which torque management program are you using? you may want to get the more milder one if the trans is bucking. i believe level 3 is the highest safe setting for a stock trans. should have been in the literature with the smarty.

in the box that came with the smarty is a red piece of paper which tells of the power levels, and what are the safe ones to run. we did make a dyno run on level 5 with a stock 05, but that was just 1 run.

As long as you understand this will not be the hottest part of the tranny and adjust for it there is no problem. I have my sensor there also and know that when the gauge reads 200* the hottest part of the tranny is probably closer to 230*.

2) It has been covered many times before but the port IS NOT a place to get trans temp. The fluid is stagnent and does not circulate what you will get is trans case temperature. At least place the probe in the pan. The best thing to do is buy a hot line($90 dollars from MASS Diesel) and install the temp probe there. The hot side of the trans gives you the most accurate trans temp BEFORE the fluid is cooled and returned to the pan.
3) How many miles on the truck? Drop the pan and adjust the bands 2nd gear and reverse and change fluid. Also, anything over 60hp and your on borrowed time. Some go longer than others but you will fry the trans very quick and those 48 are hard on parts. Bob Wagner will agree on the 60 hp setting on this since he has posted this before on the TDR at least.
