A few performance Questions for some knowledgable persons

I have a 2000 2500 sport auto 4wd. I have an edge juice with attitude, mbrp 4in t/b, intake with K&N. I have Bosch 275 injectors that I am waiting to put in and I took off a diablo power puck. my question is can I stack anything with the edge or should i just wait to put the injectors in? also should I get new studs or am i good with the stock studs? I would love to make some smoke but it doesn't make much unless I'm in stage 5 stalled up. One more question is the stage 6 worth the $100 extra?? thanks for the help guys

I'd probably get a Smarty and run it with the Edge. When you mention studs, are you talking head studs?

I think if I were you I'd get the injectors installed and then see where I was. If you only do one mod at a time you have a better understanding about what each mod does for you.

Thanks mike for the info. I was refering to the head studs and I am doing one mod at a time. I am just hooked on the black smoke and power that these cummins are capable of and I am ready for the next mod all the time!

I'm certainly no engine builder, but I don't think you'll need to worry about head studs until you start making over about 40 pounds of boost, and you won't be there with the mods you've mentioned. It might be worth retorquing your head bolts, but that's all I'd probably do.

I'm not much on smoke, but if you want smoke as well as power you could find a set of used Diesel Dynamics extrude honed injectors. With DD3s you should be able to blot out the sun. Keep in mind though, there's some very valid reasons why you would NOT want to go this route.

1. Smoke is wasted fuel, and fuel is expensive right now
2. Every tree-hugger with a nose ring and Birkenstocks will hound you like a bad nightmare (granted, it IS fun to see them get all worked up)
3. Your EGT will be higher vs. with modern EDM injectors. EDM injectors tend to make more power with lower EGT.

I think with the 275s and the Edge box with the pump wire tapped you should be around 350 HP which is at the limit of the stock turbo. If you do more than that you should consider turbo upgrades.

You should definately put the injectors in first, that is going to be some more fuel which should get you close to what you are looking for. Like mentioned before 40-42psi is the range where you want to start looking at head studs, but you wont get there until you do a turbo upgrade.

As for the smoke I would rather burn it and turn it into usable horsepower than blow it out the tailpipe as black smoke. A turbo upgrade is going to allow you to burn the fuel turning it into more horsepower, plus the turbo will help to bring your exhaust gas temps down. This is going to allow you to stay on the throttle longer without having to worry about egts.

Lots of ways to make big smoke but......Sorry, won't help you!
It makes us all look bad.

I'm switching back to Mach 4's for the summer months, just to avoid being part of the perceived problem!
Even with twins, once we get 6 months of over 85* everyday, I have trouble avoiding smoke when I have 1,000 lbs or more in the bed.
And towing med to heavy is worse.
It's fun when playing hard and only around other diesel nuts, but keep the smoke off the streets and away from the uninformed public. please

Probably. Not racing anymore and, as mentioned, they smoke badly, especially in the summer, when I'm working.
Waiting for 4's to come from Don M. Then sending him the 6's for cleaning, flow testing and pop off recalibration.

Ok Row J, I absolutely understand why you won't recommend ideas for more smoke and I think that maybe I should have been more specific in what I was hoping for. I don't want smoke all the time I basically want some smoke some times like when I'm showing off but not all the time and not in some crazy excess to black out the sun. I want the smoke along with the power.

As for the boost head studs and injectors. as i mentioned i do have bosch rv275 injectors(not installed) and I already make 30psi (max)with my edge on stage 5 and full throttle with no load (no trailer or anything). I was thinking that a turbo would be next once the injectors were in at which time i will probably have to do studs right??

one more thing any one have stage 6 or think i should get the unlock?

RV275's won't take you to the point of needing a bigger turbo. Those are only 40hp sticks.

As for the whole smoke thing, abandon that quest and build for power instead. A truck that smokes, but actually moves quick is one thing. A 300hp truck that blacks out intersections is what gives us all a bad rep and one more nail in the coffin for diesel performance and one more reason for more emission controls.

As I stated I don't want to be part of the problem I instead want to be able to smoke like my other diesel buddies do. Only around other friends and at places like my friends field or the strip. I am a responsible diesel owner and enthusiast and I understand why we don't want to smoke out intersections and parking lots and everything else. Now with that all said again I was under the impression that RV275's were 100 HP sticks. Also what would you guys suggest next for more power? Is it worth it to install the 275's or should I buy some other injectors and what should I get. What turbo do you suggest? Thanks again though for the info as well as looking out for the diesel community by sharing your concerns about the unnecessary black outs in front of the uneducated public.

Glad to hear your aware of the problem. Sounds like you "get it".
To original questions .... you need bigger injectors (more fueling).
Max "effect' is obtained with heavy throttle, coming from zero boost! Preferably in OD at around 40 mph!
Manual trannies have the advantage of lugging in a high gear to produce smoke.

Play wisely and good luck in the C.G.

I have an 01 auto so pretty close to what you have. I have 275's, edge juice w/attitude and a smarty with a PDR HX35 worked over turbo. It is a pretty good combo. I cant remember what turbo the 00 auto came with but my 01 came with a HY35 too small for what I have going. Yours may be an HX35 in which case you may be fine with your turbo.

My setup nets me 395hp and 900ft lbs tq at least according to my last dyno at 6k elevation.

My setup smokes more than I like at take off in the summer months but is easily controlled by my right foot (I live at 6k elevation and normally drive from that on up to 11k so smoke is not hard to come by).

One thing for sure is your auto wont take that combo very well for very long unless driven judicously. So you may want to start budgeting for a tranny upgrade.

Good point!
He should have an HX 35. Smaller HY 35's came out for 01's and 02's only.

As long as you have the 275s go ahead and install them, but I think I'd save up for both a set of big injectors and a new turbo. That's going to be a pricey combination depending on what you go with.
