not bad, most texas trailers without a lien do not have a title, I bought a ranch trailer with a bill of sale and had no problem getting it titled. they probably will have it inspected to see that the vin on the trailer matches the bill of sale

also see if you can get a copy of the seller's registration on the trailer since he has it tagged

Yeah it's not a problem. It's amazing how ppl go buy 7k-15k trailers and don't care for the title. We just sold two 32' GN and I just found the tittles to both of them, when I told my brother he told me to throw them away.

i havent had a title for any of my flatbeds. only one time they gave me a hard time. wanted weight slips, inspection, apply for VIN etc. i went to a different tax office, paid my 5 bucks and walked out with plates the same day (didnt have to do any of that stuff). this is my 5th(?) flatbed.

Here in Minn you just license the trailer as a home built. I just got the title today for a large GN that was built in Texas about '75, toured CA and eventually went to Canada where it was restored and updated. Former racecar trailer. Simple I just had to pay sales tax on the purchase price and got the plates the same day. Took while for the state to get around to mailing th title but it is official. There was no inspection. I just told them what I wanted for the GVW. which determined the trailer tax base. I'll carry a copy of the title with me in the truck.

Texas DOT does not even know the answer to this question.

My guess:
If it was a home built trailer you will need the original bill of goods receipt (or something that shows that it was registered as a home built trailer) and I guess a receipt showing that you bought it from the person who built the trailer.

Fellow Texas Trailer

Thanks Slice! It is not a home built trailer..the original owner has had the trailer for a few years and wasnt using it so i bought it...cant even find the vin number because the manufacturer sticker is illegible after years of sitting outside...i think its an Odem brand...Its a forty foot float. however at this point i would register as a home built if that would make it easier..I wonder if i can register it in Harris county even if i live in Montgomery.

I wanted to register a gooseneck I got from my cousin and the county office but they wanted to generate a vin for it, get it inspected, and run it across a scale. Then on top of that they wanted too much of my money. I wound up getting my cousin to register it as a farm trailer for $6 a year.

even if you try to register it as a home built dps will still have to inspect it. most farm tagged trailers do not have titles. the other route that you said is a pain but not too hard went thru it when i worked for a company
