Feeding Wires Through Firewall

Hey guys (and gals),

New member and first time poster here.

Looking for advice on best way to get through firewall for Off-Road light installation. Thought about using my shotgun, but then thought twice.

And advice?

I can't tell if you have manual or auto. If auto drill thru the plastic plug that covers the clutch penetration hole.

Firewall penetrations

I don't have specific experience with 3rd gen trucks. However, it is still a dodge. Your wires don't have to be that large, I'm assuming no larger than 12 guage and thats plenty big. There are always a number of large grommets that house existing wire harnesses or other passages through the wall. There are a number of ways to do this. I'll just mention one. Too much typing involved. Take an electrician's snake, usually a flat wire. Take a small section, four feet. Push one end through one of these exisiting grommets and do it in stages. Making sure you are in the right spot. Push it in a little then check the other side make sure you are where you think you are. Once you have it half way through. Just tape on your wire lead onto snake. Use lots of tape and do it tight. If you can bevel the wire, even better. Spray with some lube, WD40 or silicone spray etc. Just pull it through. Make sure you have enough lube or else you might drag the grommet off the wall.

use the factory passage

I have had to run wires to my electric steps and I ran my wires from outside to in the cab where all of the other wires come through on the driver's side firewall. It was only four wires but what I did was to take apart one of the tire pressure gauges, you know the silver pen-style gauges with the white strip that extends out of the bottom. With the hollowed-out case, I then stuck a sharpened wooden pencil through the case and pushed both of them together through the rubber grommet that provides that water-tight seal around the wires. Then I removed the pencil leaving the empty case inside the bundle. I ran all of my wires through the case and into the cab; and then removed the empty case and I again had that seal formed around the wire bundle. Hope this helps.

I have run a slew of wires through the rubber grommet for the hood release.

As Foxborough mentioned, with an auto you should have a plate that covers where the clutch mechanism would pass through the firewall.

I'm going off memory so I may be a bit off, but it's a black plastic plate with foam backing and it's about 4"-5" wide x 2" high with two large bolts that secure it to the firewall. It's located about 1/2 to 2/3rds the way up the firewall on the drivers side. You simply remove the plate (I had to gently hit mine from the inside to pop it out after loosening the nuts) and drill the right size hole for your wires. Even though its a plastic part, I still installed a rubber grommet in the plate to protect the wires from being chaffed.

Any of these methods will work fine, just take your pick!

where your clutch master cylinder would have been, there is a plastic plate, drill thru that and wrap everything with split loom and you will be fine. better than cutting a hole in any rubber boot.
