Question Fan nut

Was just trying to loosen the large nut(1-7/16")on my fan i read the R&r instructions on the threads on killing the KDP. after giving it 1/2 dozen good whacks its still tight i don't want to beat it to death is there any other way of getting this off without rendering it useless?

It's a left hand thread - be sure you are beating on the right side of it. I had the same problem an had to invest in a wrench ~$24 at the local auto supply house.

Took care to make sure I was hitting the right side as it's a left hand thread, did yours come fairly easy with the wrench? I should get a wrench anyhow as it's probably cheaper than replacing that nut.

It was relatively easy with the wrench. I did the same as you. Beat on it a while and finally gave up, bit the bullet and bought a wrench. It also help to have a strap wrench to remove the bolts on the fan hub once you get the fan nut off.

Smile Re: Fan nut

I think my fan nut was the only one on this web site that never came off ... mine was some how either way over tightened or striped on .

If it dose not want to come off you should have someone help you and un bolt the bearing block and remove the complete fan and shroud in one piece ...
Make sure to slide piece of card board between your radiator , some guys bend a wench to take out one of the harder bolts in the block ... I found it easyer to just unbolt the 6 bolts from the fan pull and slide it back ... that will give you enough room to get that last bolt on the bearing block .

I will tell you my fan case was extream ... I had to cut the clutch off and then I was able to put a impact gun on it and it still did not come off ...it just striped out .
If you remove it as a unit ... you can put it back the same way and not try and remove the fan from the block ....That bearing is $350 form cummins .

Hope this helps .

I always leave the belt in place to crack loose the hub nuts, no need for a strap wrench then. Remove the belt before taking the bolts all the way out though.

I could get my brothers off either, I just finished his 96 this weekend the same way Greguw did it, I could not get the fan off the hub. Left well enough alone, I'll deal with when the cluch fan goes bad.

Your going to need someone to help with the fan shroud while you handle the fan assembly.

Guess I was lucky. Was able to remove my fan clutch fairly easy.
