Hello People,

I think my fan clutch may be locked up. I can barely move it one way and only in small steps and the other way not at all. I think I can hear the extra noise when I start out. Can someone tell me what to look for in the fan clutch?

It should turn with some resistance.

When cold you should be able to spin it quite easily.

It should turn so is it repairable or do I have to find another one somewheres? ie:cummins

Hi All,

Well the engine is stone cold and when I try to turn it cw it pulls the belt off "almost" and the other way ccw it turns the engine over "almost" if I continued it would.
So I am assuming it is stuck inside. Has anyone pulled it off and repaired it or is it possible to repair?

Is the clutch electrically operated? I read another post here saying a sensor is located at the rear dside. If so maybe my sensor is toast? New hub/bearing is $500.00- @ Cummins locally + the usual gouge 12% tax.

All you need is the fan clutch, not the whole bearing/hub assembly.
Last year I paid $80 for one from the local Napa.

The clutch is mechanical, not electronic. There is a bimetallic coil like spring that expands and contracts with temp changes. When the temp rises the coil allows oil in the clutch to move to another chamber where it locks the fan.
I've never tried repairing one but my bet is parts aren't available.

Thanks Infidel, I will see what Napa has.
Mine is definitely full on all the time, which is not the usual failure mode but prob better than an overheating engine.
