Factory towing package and the tekonsha brake controller?

I never had the need for a brake controller until now. I have a factory installed towing package and have only now had a real need to use it. I purchased a Tekonsha p3 controller and a dodge adapter cable that plugged right in to my towing package. Is there anything else that needs to be done before the break controller can be used? I hooked up to the trailer and the controller won’t see the trailer. All the lights work properly just no brakes.

Dont now how different 04 from 06 is but I have that same controller and did nothing other than plug it in. I did rebuild the connector on my trailer one time(due to corrosion). I found that the trailer brakes had their own seperate positive and negative, while the light had power on all the other wires and found their ground through the chassis.

Don't know if this is the problem you are seeing but the unit will not energize the brakes while sitting still, the above url is a video on installing.

The controller seems to work fine. step on the break it lights up in the morning just tells me no trailer when the trailer is plugged in. I have been told its acting like I have an open circuit.

Now with that said i do have a problem with my ABS. The ABS computer is shot and the dealer has had it on order for about 2 months now....ya thats a another story. To keep the ABS pump from running all the time I had to pull the ABS fuse. Dont know if that is the deal.

The plug on the truck has no corrosion checked that first thing and the trailer is factory new.

According to the wiring diagram for that model there's a dark green wire that runs straight from the brake controller to the 7-pin. You should get power on pin 2 of the 7-way if you press the manual actuate button. Pin 1 is ground.

Check the ground wire from the truck to the trailer. Do not rely on the ball to provide a ground for the trailer. Grease and corrosion will inhibit conduction.

I think you may be right. This was installed at the factory. We have 2 of these trailers (new not used) and they both do the same thing. Im going to start looking at the plug on the trailer.

Do these trailers have electric over hydraulic brakes?
The P3 will handle these brakes but you have to tell it that's the type.

Check to see if the trailer has a cord with the connector molded to it, these are not always wired to the color code..

This is handy for checking out the truck:

The controller will show it's connected regardless of the setting you have it on..

I think the wires are miss-matched myself. like previously posted start with the ground and go from there..
