Factory stereo question.

Based on performance I'd say it's about -2 watts, but I'm sure I'm mistaken.
Sorry, but I've come to despise my factory system, especially when trying to listen to e-books on my iPod.

Agreed. Our Jeep Patriot with the same head unit sounds 20 times better. No bass clipping or tinny sound.
I am looking at upgrading the speakers to 5 1/4's front and rear, something in the 75W RMS range and was wondering if I'll need to get an amp for them or not.

I'd guess the factory unit is about 10 watts per channel. Adding an amp will help, but the signal is still not very good. Almost any aftermarket head unit will be an improvement over the stock unit. The stock openings in the front doors are 6"x8", 5 1/4" speakers will lose low end frequencies. I replaced mine with 6.5" component set, but apparently a 6x9" fits as well.
