Exhaust for Mileage

I just got a 2005 dodge 3500 diesel, with 4" turbo back factory exhaust. I would like to put on an exhaust on it or
I am thinking about taking off the cat and gutting it and puting it back on and then taking the muffler and puting on a aftermarket muffler on is this a good paln? if this is not a good idea can you recommend a good exhaust .I am looking for better Mileage, and too loud Thanks!!

I didn't see much gain when I changed mine out. From what I've read other that have just changed the muffler to a straight through design like them the best compared to the drone from a complete straight pipe conversion.

If you're stock in power, I would suggest just changing the muffler only. Any complete systems you will not see any inprovement.

I did the straight pipe and it was cool for a week then needed a muffler. I actually think addiing the muffler helped in my mpg where as the straight thru had hurt. Regardless, your wife will hate you with a straight thru. I would either gut the kitty or remove it and put in an aftermarket filter. You may want to search some threads for "drone" or exhaust since the placement of the muffler will affect the amount of drone.

I have been wanting to ask this but wasn't for sure. I have the MBRP stock replacement muffler in there right now and was thinking about opening up the cat also. The muffler did add a bit of noise compared to stock but not as bad as when I had a muffler delete pipe in there. If the cat takes a hike will there be drone or just a change in overall tone(deeper)?

If I were starting from scratch, today, I think it would be fun to try an EAG ahead of an Aeroturbine 4040XL.

I have done almost all of the styles and directions you can go on my 05'.
The factor muffler delete makes a nasty trumpet sound at high RPMs, and seemed to get worse without the cat. Adding a 5" tip seemed to help.

Then came the MBRP Cool Duals w/ factor cat, I left the muffler out and loved them. The sound seemed to carry very well.

But as more ppl got them it was time to be different, so next came the stacks. First was no muffler and no cat. That sucked especially when pulling a camper. You coulden't think it was so loud. Back came the cat, it helped the noise but the drone under your feet was annoying. So I dumped the cat and went with a solo MBRP muffler, and finally like what I heard. Its nice and quiet in the cab, but nice DEEP and LOUD when all over it.

As far as MPGP increse I think dumping the cat (not hollowing it out) and adding a muffler has been the most noticable gain I have had. Adding a good intake will help out also.
