What exhaust to go with

Hey guys, i need some advice. i have a volant cold air on my truck. Its the only mod i have. Should i stick with a Volant Exhaust? i would like to go with a turbo back. Which leads me to my next question i want to avoid that highway drone. Also should i go with a 4 inch or 5 inch? My next upgrade after exhaust will be a programmer then i dont know what but i would like to continue to upgrade. sorry for the list of questions

A full exhaust would prove useless unless you're doing it to an 03-04. A simple muffler delete will make the same results. Put your money towards a Smarty first.

Fill out your sig so we can further help you.

Your signature, located in the User CP function on the top left corner of the page. Just some details on your truck, yr model, mods, etc so that we don't have to ask you everytime. When you ask a ? then we can answer it quicker.

I just installed a 5" off road cat delete exhaust (for my off road truck, of course) it seems to have picked up more than 1MPG. I got the Magna flow and it's loud, I am going to have to change out the muffler to a Donaldson or something.

I agree with rip, Its a waste because your truck already has 4" from the turbo back. Most aftermarket exhaust is 4" or 5". You wont benefit from a 5" unless your over 500hp, and you might even loose a little low end over 4". Free flowing muffler or straight pipe will get the same results. There are alot of Smarty fans on here. ( for good reasons ) I'm one of them. But both programmers make good power on trucks like yours.

^^^^Dave pretty much summed it up. Do some reading, use the search function and you will see how much the Smarty has been praised. BullyDog will be having new releases, but the Smarty has a much better customer service right now and easily updateable, not many problems at all.

As far as the exhaust goes, many ppl upgrade for looks or sound, but the stock pipe with a good muffler will get you similar results. Some ppl even lose their kitties somehow.

thanks alot guys! my only prob is i dont want to replace a stock 4 inch exhaust with aftermarket 4 inch. doesnt seem right. i would also like to be in the low 500 HP range in the near future. i suppose ill go with the smarty first. now can i just plug and go with it. my diesel mechanic buddy says that its not a bad idea to upgrade fuel systems before a programmer. any truth to that?

I lost my kitty somewhere after I pulled the 4" to install the 5" t.b. system. My muff. isn't a donaldson but it's not too loud, can still carry a conversation without yelling. The muff. is 24" long and I have it where the bed starts, but I'm looking to go to a single stack. You can see my mods. and I like my PMT alot more now since I first did when I bought it.
I just added a lift pump on the frame rail for now til I change out the turbo and injectors then I'll probably need a mod. cp3. Then studs then til the next mod(s). Can never be satisfied with the power.

Pantera, a fuel system is imperative to running the Smarty in the higher levels, however your problem will then lie in your tranny, it will slip eventually, a 6spd can handle sw5 on the Smarty while an auto can handle only sw3 safely. The fuel system is extra insurance, but not necessary first.

This is how I would go

Smarty,
Fuel,
Tranny ($),
Turbo.

You can pull 500hp on the stock turbo, but it will get hot.
