There are other options besides straight pipes. I used a muffler replacement kit from MBRP. The price was reasonable and it sounded better without being too loud. Now I have stacks, and that is a whole other story.....

On a 2003, the exhaust is probably getting close to having some holes in it. The tailpipe on my 2004 was nearly rusted thru at the muffler. I went with a magnaflow pro 4" turbo-back exhaust.

I just put a 5" turbo back exhaust kit, including a resonator, on my truck. The tone isn't offensive at start-up and we don't notice it at all at highway speeds.

On an '03 you just have 3.5" exhaust with a 4" tailpipe. I put on the exhaust elbow off the newer trucks along with the full 4" downpipe and fabbed up my own exhaust with a big donaldson and heavy truck parts. I used the stock tailpipe since it was 4". Easy to do and only $300 or so for parts. No drone and quiet for the Mrs.

03' no cat is pretty loud if you straight pipe it. Nice sound, but even a "kid" I know is thinking about putting a muffler back on. Lotsa drone towing and highway driving.
Trucks with a cat and resonator are much quieter, just a little rumble with no muffler.
