I was just wondering if all exhaust brakes make a whistling sound when engaged. My one friend has a ford and got a banks brake on it and it makes a whistling nosie when engaged. I'm not comparing dodge to ford but do all the brakes for dodges do that. I was reading about the BD Brake and it says they have a sealed unit and there is no whistling noise associated with the brake. Just wondering if this is true or if any body has a bd brake or others. And how they like them. It also doesn't feel like the brake is braking the truck when he just driving around. I was wondering if all are like that or you can feel the brake kicking in....I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but all help would be appreciated....

I have a PacBrake, and I like it; it whistles (hisses)

Does your friend have an manual or auto? The auto won't show as much response as the standard unless there is a lockup switch of some knnd. Finally, the brake only engages with the go-pedal completely off, and the full effects of the brake are not apparent until the RPM is around 2700.

Ive got the jacobs e-brake (24V 6 speed) and it hisses like the others when engaged and idleing. The higher the rpm the more braking you feel, if you are up around 2600-2800 rpm you really feel and hear the brake kick in. Works great even if you are unloaded.

The only thing about it I dont like, is that if you have a 24V you have to clean your IAT sensor more often.

Yes my friends truck is a automatic, and when he showed me it it was in the lower rpm range, which is why it probably didn't feel like it was doing anything......Also does anyone hear have a bd exhaust brake on there truck. If they do how does it sound/perform.

I've got the BD exhaust brake and love it, it works very good, has the same hisssing sound that the others have, it takes about 2 seconds before you feel full braking. BD seems to work best in the 1600 to 2300 rpm rangebut still works above or below those rpm's as well.

I have the Cummins E Brake. Yep, it has the hissing sound. Back in oct '99, scotty and I met at BD dyno days. As I warmed up my truck to leave, we were BSing, and I recall him looking at my truck and asking what that silly (editted for the moderator) noise was! I laughed and showed him it was just my brake, nothing serious.

I turn it off while waiting at stop lights...once I am up to operating temperature.

Hi and welcome to the site,
I to gave a Pac-Brake and it is in a truck that is equiped with an automatic. I don't hear any hissing, when it is on, just more like a low grunt. I do have a commander unit which will keep the torque converter lock-up till it reaches a pre-set speed, aroud 30mph on mine. I can feel when the brake is engaged, but it is more pronouced at higher rpm ranges. I love it, and only have one regret, thats I wish I wouldn't have waited so long to install it. They whistle like crazy if you have a leaky manifold gasket.
