There are no warranty problems with exhaust brake on Rams with standard tranny. Dodge has an option of exhaust brake available for 2003. PacBrake is very popular in my area, all have their plusses. Banks is the most expensive. Mostly personal choice. :D

Jacobs E-Brake here. Has worked flawlessly for three years now. Got pics if you want to see it installed.

??? I have the pac brake in the 94 and NO WAY i'd but one in the new 02 ---it didn't work all that well for the amount of bucks like i told the dealer i be better off with a hole in the floor and a new pair of vibrem boots to drag. my 2 cents worth

David, I have a BD brake and think it is one of the best mod's I have made. The BD works better at lower rpm's than the other brands although they cost a little more. My 5er' weighs around 9,000 lbs and the brake is worth every penny, especially when I tow in the Sierras. I use it empty also, saving wear and tear on the brakes. If you are ever up in the Riverside area, give me a shout and we can take a ride in my truck so you can get a feel for an exhaust brake.<br><br>Sam

I've had a BD in my '89 (auto) for two years now and it works very well. Updated to heavy-duty valve springs to get the most boost pressure. Will be getting an '03 Laredo one of these days and plan to have the Dodge exhaust brake installed before I pick it up. Sure increases brake life.

Anyone ordering a 2003, there is an incentive plan from the dealer on the Ebrake. If you are in business (can show a tax ID number) or show a contractors license (don't know extent of that but it sounds pretty broad), they will give a $500 rebate. This rebate could be used on some other accessories also, don't know much about the others. The Ebrake is not yet available even though they have a part number. Due to the larger exhaust, new version is not on the shelf yet. This means $299 installed. Not a bad deal. I have had mine on order for a week, but no sign yet. They indicated it might be a month.<br><br>Bob
Got a Jacobs on order form a dodge dealer at $549.00, can't wait till I get her on.

I had a pacbrake on my 99 I just got rid of. Best money I ever spent. That truck pulled heavy loads for 84,000 miles and I inspected the brakes right before I sold it and they still looked brand new.

I, too, am looking to get a brake. I know that Banks is the most expensive. But it appears to be made a little beefier than the others. I want to do a 4" stainless exhaust at the same time. I want to be able to hook up the 4" without any 3" adapters from the brake. Anybody have any experience with this?

Why don't you wait a month or so for the brake to come out for the 03's. 4" exhaust. :) See how it might fit. See my post in 2003 Non Engine section called "EBrake for $299" for part number.

Do any of the mentioned exhaust brakes work with an 89 engine with 5-speed??
Are they vehicle specific; or, can they be employed in cross-bred trucks??
Thanks.

I believe there are jake brakes available for the earlier trucks, and they are somewhat vehicle specific as different exhaust manifolds, turbos and what not were on various years... As long as that stuff is stock in your truck, I wouldn't think it would be too tough to install.
Price check your dealer, and the local Cummins parts house.

any inline e brake will work on the 89 -93s if you have a 5spd .with an auto you would be better off putting your hand out the window with out a lock up converter it is worthless

It's my understanding, that if you install an exhaust brake on a 12 valve cummins, you have to upgrade to heavier exhaust valve springs in order for the device to work effectively.
The '98.5 and newer 24 valves already have the heavier valve springs from the factory. The E-brake was on of my best mods. Love it.

Has anyone tried a D-celerator exhaust brake?
http://www.usgear.com/dcelerator.htm
I like the feature of a waste gate instead of holes in the valve plate to keep pressure from destroying the engine. My 03 Dodge 2500 4x4 6 spd manual will have someones exhaust brake on it before I go to the mountains again with my 31' Hitchiker II. One time over Wolf Creek Pass without was enough. I am not too crazy about the Jacobs (Mopar) unit that has to have a vacuum pump installed.

David, I put a Jacobs E-brake on my truck when I had my big slide in, and thought it was great. Now with the 5er, I like it even more. Works great, easy to install. There's pics in my gallery if you want to see what it looks like installed. The only drawback that I know of is that it won't work with a full 4" down pipe....ie, like the kind you would need on a B1 for instance.
getting ready to put a Jacob E brake on my 96 12v w/5sp.
need help finding links to procedure for changing out exhaust valve springs.
edit: found it http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/upgrade-your-valve-springs-t171288.html?p=2530067#post2530067

Just put an Pac Brake on a couple month ago. The best add on I've done so far.
thinking putting on 60# springs for exhaust and intake.
it'd be a shame not to do both while I've got it apart.
at some point I'll be bombing my 12v to 450hp range. but I'm a bit worried about comments of putting too much pressure on valve seats.

I have a Pac Brake on my 04. It uses a 12 volt air compressor to activate the valve. The Jake brake uses a vacuum pump off of the fan belt. There have been a few threads about the VP locking up and now you have to change belts and something else to drive your truck. Not something I want to do if it pukes when it's raining.
My brake was on the truck when I bought it. I have no idea which one slows you down the best.
You may use the same AC to fill your air bags and or air tank.
If the AC dies on the PB then you keep driving. You just can't stop as well.
Food for thought.
if I understand correctly... vacuum driven exhaust brakes default to open position with zero vacuum applied. so if you ever lost your vacuum pump. would cease to work, as brakes cannot stay in closed position without a vacuum source.

Agreed. I understood what I ment to say I just didn't communicate it well. Sorry.
The problem is the vacuum pump locks up and the pulley won't turn. That is what has been posted before. The serp belt locks up and you aren't going anywhere until you change back to stock pulley configuration and the stock belt.
I've read that on more than one thread. But I guess if we believed every post that the truck had a problem we wouldn't drive them at all.

I guess we could say that about the AC compressor, or the alternator, or the water pump, or the idler pulley, or the ??????? We still have them and use them and go down the road. I do carry both the stock serp and the one for use with the vacuum pump. Mine has been flawless in 70,000 and I use it even when running solo. Now if I could only figure how to carry a serp for no AC, or no idler, or no water pump - - oh wait a minute, that won't work. :o[laugh]

I am in the process of changing over my Jacobs to a BD. The brake works great I just can't keep vacuum pumps on the truck. The first time the pump went out it was still under warranty. This time it is not under warranty called to check the price of a new pump $949. I already have air on the truck so BD will sell the brake housing and a solenoid for $570. Its just cheeper to replace it than repair it. So my advice is stay away from anything that uses a vacuum pump.
that make no sense at all.. you've got other things that work off vacuum on your truck. so you've got to fix your vacuum pump regardless if jacob brake is there or not.
$950 is outrageous for a vacuum pump. does anyone have an aftermarket pump yet? about the only thing you can do is purchase pump from someone like oriellys that will give a lifetime warranty

Stumbled across this site before I bought the Jacobs. http://www.o-f-i.com/index.php?pid=11. Only $300 for a pump, and $120 for a pump pod. The pod sounds like rebuild kit of some sort?

You should do both valve springs; I wished I did. I installed my cummins/jacob exhaust brake 4 days ago with the 60lb exhaust springs that came with the kit. It would have taken me another 45 mins to install the intake valve springs since you already remove the rocker arms, head bolt, etc but I didn't think about it at the time.
thanks... that's what I'm planning on doing.
have anyone gotten any more feedback about too much tension on valve seats from 60lb springs. logic says if that was a problem 24valve cummins would be having valve issues.

Nothing else on my truck runs off the vacuum pump. My truck did not even have a vacuum pump untill the dealer put the Jacobs on the truck. Most of your major parts stores do not list a vacuum pump, or a belt for a truck that has a vacuum pump, for that matter.
wow... didn't realize 2007 cummins uses zero vacuum accessories.
how does the air conditioning duct routing work?
what operates the 4x4 engagement (on 4x4 of course)

Electric motors/actuators in A/C. 4X4 is either manual lever (on my truck) or electric motor on others. No vacuum on my 2005 either. This may be same for all 3 Gens...

I had the Pac Brake installed by the dealer when I bought my '02 new. Within 50,000 miles it was sticking shut and had to pull over and beat on it with a hammer handle to get it open. Fooled with it off and on for several years and finally was told (by Pac Rep ??) on this forum to put vacuum filter, etc., etc. and did all that. Better, but took 10,000 miles to really work properly again. Truck now has 150,000 miles and I've given up on the Pac Brake.
When working (??) it does do a very good job and saves the brakes very well. Very frustrating to hafta find a pull out to bang on the thing to open it. With it closed you will Not keep driving........I promise you.
Less than a year later - this spring - it jammed up again. Had it apart, cleaned it, changed filter, banged head against wall........am now 3,000 miles into a 10,000 mile trip and haven't used it once. It's also an exhaust restriction even when open.
I did find, too, that it doesn't always open all the way and EGT spikes can drive you crazy.........out of the truck and bang on it some more. I will NOT buy another one, but am going to do some research on others. Like to find one that isn't smaller diameter than exhaust.

Whatever I'm just telling what I've seen posted more than once re: the Jake vacuum pumps.
There's more than a couple of threads where the pumps locked up prematurely.
Doesn't matter to me I don't have one.
Now just how would you use that vacuum pump to fill your air bags?

Just another point to bring up. If you think you ever might want to upgrade the turbo you may want to opt for an inline brake. I did that, and if I choose to upgrade the turbo I can keep my $1k brake, all I have to replace is the downpipe and two $15 flange fittings to attach the brake. Turbo brakes are nice to install but they are turbo specific (or at least turbo flange diameter specific).
As far as getting a proportional brake vs standard, I have to say that my proportional BD with the simplest possible pressure valve - offset butterfly - works excellent at 1,600 rpm. I opted for BD instead of Pac just because of the inherent design simplicity, fewer parts = fewer parts to break.

Call any Cummins parts counter and give them the part #.
They will even ship the thing to your door for a few $'s.
I realize that DC needs to make a buck or two, but there's a difference between a reasonable mark up and getting bent over. That said, just about anything Cummins can be purchased from Cummins or any other heavy truck parts counter. I use Franklin truck parts or Cummins.
BTW, a Cummins water pump is about $100.00 from Franklin.
Sorry DC [nonono]

that p/n is good from 04.5 thru 06 all together N back in business again. $197 out the door, not as good as under $100, but far cry better then $900 from DC.
