Exhaust brake Question.. And had my fast idle turned on.

Hi. My truck has an exhaust brake on it and it works fine.
But Im curious what it actually does? How does it work?
I had my fast idle option turned on by the Dealer today..
It normally idles at 700 and when you turn on the cruise
and it the set button it now goes to 1100 and then if you hit the accel
button it will go up as high as 1500.. It wont go lower then 1100 with in on.

Thanks

For an exhausting brake answer go to:

PS if you fill out your sig line we will know what you have for a vehicle..

Too fill out your signature line go the main page click on "user cp" - upper left - then the edit signature tab..

Thats the purpose of high idle, to idle the truck up to 1100-1500. If you don't want it on, turn the cruise off.

It isn't technically a traditional exhaust brake. It is a variable sliding vane on the backside of your turbo that, when closed, adds a significant amount of backpressure to the engine, causing it to choke itself. The choking of the engine forces it to slow which, in turn, slows your vehicle. This is a very broad spectrum description of the operation but it gives you the general idea.
