Excesive Oil Blow-By out of vent tube

Ok all....got another prob. If any had seen our last saga of the broken injector...this is part II. Cust drove the truck from our shop (After we had extensively road tested with no probs at all) about 20 miles and noticed lots of smoke from under the truck. Then he noticed a lot of oil dripping from the frame rail on driver side. He called and let us know. We drove the truck back to our shop with no probs at all. I ran the truck today and noted the valve covers were leaking pretty bad. Then the rear main looks like its leaking. BUT its got all this motor oil on the frame rail back to the rear axle. Bad enough to drip on the ground. We idled the truck and found no oil to leak but pressure from vent tube. BUT i think this is normal to have pressure. After awhile, we get some light smoke. But the truck runs fine. No probs other than the oil leak. Any suggestion? He wants to know if the injector swap/problem might have caused any probs. Suggestions???? Lil background info, cust doesn’t know the truck, he JUST bought it and the first time he drove it was to our shop. That is our pickle!

Re:Excesive Oil Blow-By out of vent tube

My truck blew oil out the dipstick tube and was dripping from the frame as you described.Lost about a gallon or so.Did that one time about 3k miles ago and has not done it since.Did a blowby test and it is over specs.Truck runs great, but it blows.Trying to find the source now. From what I have learned so far, you get blowby from : worn or broken rings, blown headgaskets and on rare ocassions the turbo. The heads is off now, cylinders look good, crosshatches visible, headgasket did not look blown other than a water leak and the turbo is ok. Oh well.Hope you have better luck figuring out your customers truck. If he just bought the truck,it could have had this problem awhile.....

Since we usally dont get into trucks this deep, what would be the proper way to do a blow by test? We were told to check compression but lack a compression tester. But i think one is going to get bought before its all said and done! Truck runs great, just blows light smoke out vent tube when warm.

Hey Mudin,If the blowby tube is clear and its spitting up out the dipstick tube, its got blowby .To run the test ,you need to put a tee with a .221 inch orifice on the end of the blowby vent tube and measure the pressure on the other outlet of the tee with a manometer.Over 20" is baaaad.I sent you the instructions for running a blowby test in your email.Good luck.

Got the test. Thanks for the info....think the local Dodge dealer is going to help out with the compression test. Since the dang gauge is about $500!!! But i will take a good look at the blowby test and see if i can figure it out....looks simple enough! Thanks much!

Mudinford,

this is supposed to be more accurate than a compression test. I just learned what it was, and I figured it is an option. The setup is for a gasser, but could easily be converted with the right fitting for injector hole.

Mudinford,
I would grab a quick sample of oil and have it tested(about $10 at your local Wheeler CAT place) . This is the way I new I had problems. Also it may help prove a long term problems and nothing to do with what you did.

Mild Blow-by

I had oil and smoke coming out my breather tube awhile after I had put in semi-synthetic oil. We did a pressure test and it was 18"hg which was high enough to blow the water right out of the tube. We changed the oil back to regular oil and ran the engine up hard and hot and retested. The pressure went down to 4"hg. It seems it was just me putting in semi-synthetic oil that did this. Hope this saves some grief
