Engine shuts off and engine light is on

On the way home just got off the highway and the engine dies. Nothing rough or anything, put in neutral and it starts back up. Engine light is on also. Anyone experience this before or can guess what it can be. Called dealer and they said to bring by in the morning.

Also, noticed the steering box has grease residue on it. PS did seem to be low, is this a known problem?

Thanks

Cycle the ignition 3 times and you should get a "P" code on the odometer.

My '04 started doing that in conjunction with a loud clattering at idle. Got it in to a dealer (visiting the in-laws). Bad injector. It was gunked up with some kind of slimy black stuff. The tech showed it to me. This was in Michigan. The part had to come from Indiana, I think.

Did the dealer cover it under warranty? It seems they had an avenue to pin it back on you for crappy fuel. Wouldn't surprise me.

No, they didn't even try to wiggle out of warrantying it. And I was from "Out of Town". In Ann Arbor, Michigan, from Florida (at the time). Did a nice job on it, even washed and vacuumed the truck. Suggested running some fuel additive thru it for a few tanks to clean out anything left from what was obviously a dirty batch of diesel.

Service guy called and said truck will be ready today. Said lift pump was bad, is this the same as the injector pump?

Also, replacing the seal for the steering box, this was the reason for the leak.

I will have more info after I get the truck back.

No, lift pump and injector pump are not the same. The lift pump, also known as transfer pump, is the low pressure pump that pulls the fuel from the tank. The injector pump is the high pressure pump. Mucho difference in price and work involved to change.

On 2nd gen trucks, a lift pump failure was often followed by an injector pump failure. Injector pump is cooled and lubed by the fuel passing thru it. Lift failure starves the injector pump. I had a lift pump failure on my 98.5. It was on a trip from the Keys to Michigan for Christmas. From the time of calling the wrecker til we were back on the road was three hours. Not a bad breakdown, especially since it was warranteed. Part of the EPA mandated emission system warranty.

Talked with another service guy and he did say it was injector pump, not lifter pump like the other dope said. I did notice that it seem kinda sluggish, so hopefully this will help. Also had 3 injectors replaced about 3 months ago. Wonder if I should get fuel some place else from now on?

Finally got the truck back today!! They never could give me a great answer as to why it took so long. It was the injector pump (pn:R5104877-AA) cost was over $1k just for that part. Also had a leaking steering box and they replaced with new one (pn:52106835-AE). All was covered under warranty, have 19k miles on truck. Also the rental car was almost $500 for 10 days and my Max Care Ext warranty (Dodge) covered that.

Hopefully no more problems, think I'll be getting fuel from another gas station from now on!
