I have an early 98 12 valve 2500 2wd ex cab / flat bed. It ran flawlessly for me for about 100,000 miles of its 250,000 total. My son is bringing it and our dump trailer back from a job site and manages to spin the main and throw a couple of rods. The engine is hosed. I need a new one. I am looking at everything from a short block to a long block to a complete drop in. Need to know best option. Please help.

Currently looking at a drop in from rebuilt diesels dot com. I would post the link, but am not sure that is allowed.

They seem to have a good price and all I need is my starter, alternator, power steering pump and fan.

Also, is there a source for a larger alternator for that truck? I want to install a 2500 watt inverter, but the 100 amp alternator is not large enough to support it on full amp draw.

For the price, you can't beat it, and you don't lose your old engine.

Whatever you do, be careful if you are looking at TnT Leasing, lots of issues with their engines.

Update:

Thanks to all who gave help. I found a 130,000 mile engine out of a 98 automatic in Ala-bama. It happened that the guy with the engine hunts on land adjacent to my best friend, He was kind enough to bring it along on his next deer hunt for no charge. I am back in business!!!!

I now also have an engine/parts available. As far as I can tell the tubo is toasted, crank is spun, block good, but needs line bored and boiled, rest should be OK. Any ideas on the best way to turn this into some cash to recover a little of my costs?

Front cover alone if it isn't cracked from a KDP hit should bring 200 or so, the Injector pump should bring 4-600......... Head should still be good.

I would run an ad here and also on your local Craigslist.

Contaminated or highly used oil. Maybe a blocked oil galley?
You can run a sample to a place like blackstone if youre interested. Babbitt metal in the oil would get picked up on a test.
If I had done it on mine, I could have saved myself 2k and a cam.
wear metals and lack of ZDDP would have shown up.
