Eng belt
Anyone have trouble with their eng belt? This is the second time this has happened, 1st time 2 months ago. The other day I shut my truck off ,and when I cranked it up too leave it was making a whinning noise just like before, the belt is trying too come off the pwrsteering pulley, off about 1/4-1/2 inch. you can take a long bar and pry it over a little and crank it back up and it goes back on. Dealer says sounds like a bad belt , of course they did not have one in stock. This time I found part of the bel that came apart around the fan hub.Anyone have any suggestions?

Bolts behind the fan like to come loose. Once it woobles, the belt tracks a groove or two off, then shreds.
Mine did it and it looked like the fan was getting ready to jump off throgh the radaitor.
Take a look at the way the belt is tracking.
Other than that I dunno.

T-7 Firefighter (Britt) belt shredded on him. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=59454 I believe it's been fine after the problem was fixed.

Yep, do a search on my user name (WEXMAN + belt), ot T7 Firefighter. There have been many of us on here and TDR who have had belt shredding issues. For most of us, the dealers merely replaced the belt, and never diagnosed the issue. FWIW, my new belt, which replaced the factory belt which shredded at 5400 miles, has been fine (knock wood - don't want to jinx myself) for over 10,000 miles now. I do check it weekly however.
There have been enough of these threads on here, TDR, and dieselram.com that I'm surprised the dealers haven't had a TSB for it yet. The problem is, I don't think DC KNOWS what the problem is or may be.
Since you can actually see yours jumping, sounds like you may have an alignment issues. As I said, with mine, T-7's, and some others, we DON'T appear to have had an alignment issues. My best guess is that some were installed incorrectly at the factory. The pulley at the bottom passenger side (what is that..AC or water pump?) leaves NO room for error for belt tracking - the front edge of the belt is RIGHT THERE at the edge of the pulley, when the ribs are seated properly. All it would take is someone not quite paying attention on installation to have that mistrack.
Please keep us posted on your fix. By the way, get a different dealer. It's obviously NOT a "bad belt", they just don't want to deal with the diagnosis.
PJ, that is interesting information. Did you notice that, or your dealer? For those of us whose dealers said "bad belt 
, which includes T7 and me, this is something I might check out. Although, as I said (still knocking wood 
) mine has been OK for over year now, so if I had had a bolt or two loose, I would think I would have lost another one long before now. Still worth checking out, though.

Okay, actually my brother in law go out of his truck with an odd look on his face and hustled over to my drivers window asking what that horrible noise was coming from my truck. I popped the hood with it still running; a second later he was freaking out screaming "Shut it Down"!!
I immediately called the dealer because 250 miles prior to this they had it in for a LP and VP change under warranty Of course, they denied any responsibility, and I tightened up the bolts and went on my way. The belt has a 1/8" X1" chunk missing (1 rib) and I really need to get a new one on there, just have had so many other things to pay for lately. The bolts were less than hand tight, one gone all together. About a week ago I was at the landfill and some guy asked me if I had ever had any trouble with the bolts coming out of the fan????
I was pretty suprised, as I had writen it off to the dealers neglect.
(They wouldn't have the belt or fan off for a VP swap)? seemed to me it would make more room in there??

Is the belt a dealer only item? Mine's been missing a rib since 2000 miles, but never chunked any further. When i did the timing mod, I lined up all the ribs, and sure enough, as soon as you start it up, it skips one foward. If someone has a part# for the belt, or an y belt that would work, it would be appreciated.

to unravel it while waiting for a flatbed that could handle a dually.My dealer replace under warranty, but I carry a spare which I ordered from either Napa or Autozone. Both have them for our vehicles. I believe part numbers are on their website.

I've had three come into the shop (common rail engines) that had the back of the belt frayed away.....new belt and tensioner and I never saw or heard of one coming back for the same issue.

Mine done the same thing, my belt is now 1/4 narrower than used too be I will let you all know as soon as I find out something. Thanks for all of you'alls help.

Nope, never found the missing ribbon of fan belt, but I have close to 15k on my truck now and it never chunked any further, so I stopped worrying about it. I do want to have a spare though. I'll go ahead and just go to autozone/oreilly/napa and get one.

mine shredded at about 50,000 miles turned out to be a bad tensioner. I got a gates (I think replacment from the local auto parts store). The tensioner had very little play in it but it was enough to make the belt walk off the a/c pulley and get cut up.

When mine went, the dealer *claimed* they check all pullies and the tensioner, and that all was well. I would have felt more comfortable if they had replaced the pulley.

John bought mine at Autozone. it's a goodyear Gator Back. I have used the belts before, very high quality, quite, and nice. My V-10 used to wine with any other belt, it loved the goodyears (and for that motor they were like 28 dollars, not sure why so cheep. The one for our trucks is around 60 dollars I believe. Part # is 8PK3202. Without AC is 8PK3800 (do any of our trucks come without AC??
