a bureaucratic waste of time and money!

Vehicle emission testing is an old, outdated, ineffective system that is driven by government waste. First, todays electric fuel injected vehicles are running so much cleaner than the 1988 and older carburetor vehicles. With all the sensors and computer controls, cars run very clean.

Even if their is a sensor related problem, a fuel injected vehicle will run in a CLOSED LOOP if there are any failures or troubles in the ECM. Even then it will still run 100x better than a tuned carburetor vehicle.

Do you want to know WHO gets targeted and in trouble from emission testing???? The poor.

They are the ones who can't afford a NEW vehicle or replacing expensive engine parts. So, what does the government do? It suspends their car and takes away their ability to drive a car. Now, they lose their job because they can't drive, thereby making them even more poor. Meanwhile, the government does nothing to the RICH person who owns 5 cars, a plane and a speedboat!
They pollute MORE than the poor person driving a 1995 Toyota that can't afford a new car or $1,500+ in repairs.

The fairbanks Northstar Borough is required by the EPA to comply with federal emmissions testing regulations simply because, in the winter when there is a good inversion sitting over the Tanana valley the air dosen't circulate well and our co2 emissions go over the limit. It only happens once or twice a year and it is caused by the weather not by the vehicles. Luckily Diesels are exempt. Also, the silly government came up with a program to improve emissions by giving out free O2 sensors and instalation to people with vehicles that passed the tailpipe test but wer CLOSE to failing. If your vehicle failed you did not qualify They go so far up here as to banning wood stove use durring certian times to control particulate emissions. That only happens during the winter when you really NEED the wood stove.

As for the $$ side of things, several years ago they changed the regs from requiring a yearly test to every 2 years. As soon as they did that, the price of the test and required certificate doubled. The paperwork and test stayed the same. What a rip off.

ALL enviro laws are poor man's tax.... But the poor are to stupid to know it.

There use to be an emmissions test in several cities in Florida,
awhile back the EPA stated that they needed new testing because they were no sure the current tests were testing the correct emmissions.

The than Gov. ( Jebb Bush )Told the EPA if your not sure than we ain't testing
Now NO emmissions tests AND No vehicle inspections PERIOD.

I live on the boarder of Mexico. They burn tires, plastic, and anything that will burn just to get heat for homes or even cooking. This thick haze comes over to the US side often. We (the city I live in) get punished by the EPA for having poor air quality and they have even admitteded that most comes from vehicles that are registered in Mexico and driven here in the US and the pollution that is blowing over from Mexico but still say it is OUR problem. That's our government dollars at work!!

In my county in NC if your gass car is newer than 97 they hook it up to a computer to read the codes if any and O2 sensor for the emisions inspection. If the check engine light is on or they find anything wrong with it it has to be fixed before they let you drive it home. The info is sent back to the state capitol and if you are late the next time they send you a ticket in the mail. They also doubled the price of the inspection when they inacted this rule. Talk about taxing the poor.

At least in the Denver area they are doing the mobile ramp screening, this year both my gassers got a pass due to this, saved me $50 + time I'm not sure if diesels can get a pass with this system though, maybe I'll make a phone call

Certainly glad in Texas that diesels truck are expempt from the gasser type emmision testing. Still need annual vehicle safety inspection. Got mine Saturday, I drive in left it running, handed tech my insurance card, tech checked the lights, horn, looked under the hood(not sure what at), spent 5 minutes clicking checks to YES on a screen, scraped the old inspection sticker off, put the new one on, I have him $12.50 and he gave me receipt, insurance card and inspection summary paper. I get in and back out and go. This did take probably 15 minutes.

ed, what are you trying to say? that most of us wont pass the opacity tests?

I run a safety and emissions test station. The emission testing hit us in Pa. about 3 yrs ago. It did initially take most of the old tampered with vehicles off the road, but now with most vehicles being computer controlled I don't see why they don't just check to see if the check engine light is on or not!
We currantly have 3 differant tests depending on which county you live in and the air quality.
1st is a visual test only
2nd is visual/gas cap test, newer cars will set CEL if cap is bad
3rd is visual/OBD test, hook up to OBD and check emission system.

I don't think it's really needed any more but it is my bread and butter!

As far as safety inspections go every state should be doing this! You would be amazed at some of the junk on the road that people think are safe! Bald tires, no brakes, no exhaust, bad ball joints, steering etc.... it's scary.

It's a shame big brother has to tell people to fix their junk.

Your right, not sure if folks don't make the connection? don't care? (until they are required to do it them they howl like a banshee) or think they have a right to inflict this on the rest of the citizens

If they ever bring emissions testing into Ky on diesels, i'll just throw my stock injectors turbo and dvs back in, slide my plate all the way back, and tighten the starwheel all the way up. Reckon i could pass then?
