This is the 3rd thread I've seen about this over about a year and a half period. Here's the rundown so far:

Some folks are afraid of the electric shift case. They cite examples of them breaking. Their examples consist of their grandpa's 1982 ford or chevy having a problem. None of the examples actually pertain to a newer dodge.

Someone chimes in saying that the mechanically shifted cases are more troubleprone, sometimes citing an example involving a dodge of some vintage or another. Frame flex putting the linkage in a bind is often the apparent cause, due to the truck being in some outrageously stressful predicament involving rocks and such.

In the end, and lot of tongue wagging is done, and none of it ever seems to be about an ACTUAL DODGE ELECTRIC SHIFT CASE failing.

Go get a truck with the electric case and sleep soundly. It'll be alright.

my 04 has the shift on fly 4x4. I was suprised, thought it was only on the 05-06 models. So far so good though.

What he said. This is now my fifth (5th) 4x4 (94 Wrangler, 96 Ram 1500, 97 Ram 2500, 01 Ford F350) and the first with an electronic case. I too, was wary about the e-case. Now that I've used it, I don't think I'd ever go back.

This case shifts virtually instantly and cleanly every time. It engages much faster than any of the manual lever-pulls on the above-mentioned vehicles.

THe 97 2500, with the 241, was sometimes balkly coming in and out of 4x4.

I've had electronic shift on my last 4 trucks (97 & 99 Chev and 04 & 06 Ram) with total of about 400,000 kms and never a glitch. They shift absolutey silent and very smooth, even 4Lo. And we use it ALOT up here. Most everyone I know has moved with the times and gone electronic and I honestly have never heard of any problems. I'd never go back unless I had to. It'd be like going back to roll-up windows, no cruise control and no intermittent wipers or like going back to rotary phone, a DOS computer, or black& white TV, lol. Never.

The Button vs The Hammer

Simple.>The Button: Looks good out the way but not as efficient.

Meaning: The button takes a second or two to do its procedure on gettin ner done. If it work. But when you drop the Hammer, Its instant.

Actually, if you read my post above, in my experience, it is the opposite. Maybe it's this NVG 273 case, but this case engages and disengages (read: immediately) than any of my previous manual levers.

I have always had the manual before this one and they all were harder to put in than my electric shift . Mine goes in right now no mater if the tires are turned or not . The 4 low is a little different , truck needs to be in neutral for it to work on mine but that was always the same case on my manuals to . I did read somewhere that there is a way to shift these underneath if a problem does arise , I will need to do more reading on it . I was scared of it when I first got it and would have opted against it if I could have back then , but as time goes on the fear has resided and I have grown to like this gizmo .
