electric fans

I would like to know if any body is running electric fans on there trucks. I am considering buying a set of these fans for my truck and would like a little info on them the. Are they a good idea or not worth the money. Any feedback would be a great help. Thanks in advance Garry

I have the flex a lites on my truck I like it. really good quality shroud and setup all stock components still fit on the new shroud. I didn't notice a fuel mileage diff but I did change to different size/ type tires at the same time
It is nice in traffic to keep the ac nice and cold and the engine cool at low speeds.

In canada you shouldn't have a problem with keeping stuff cool. Down here I'd be worried about them keeping the motor cool. My motor fan runs a lot and it pulls double what the flex-a-lites pull.

I'm all for electric fans. I haven't seen any real data about how much air the stock fan pulls at a specific rpm. Flex a lite claims 5500cfm or so for their cummins setup. They claim it's enough air for up to an 18,000lb gvw rig.

I think with some proper hood venting to make the airflow a bit more efficient, the electric fans should cool enough for most applications. I'm thinking some exit vents on the sides of the hood might do the trick. Trying to push all of the cooling air down past the engine into the high pressure air under the truck doesn't seem very efficient.

One reason I'm interested in electric is so there is still air under the hood when the temps go waaaaaaaayyyyyy below freezing. That freezing wind on the block really cools a diesel down unless it's really putting out.

The factory fan flows 10,000+cfm. I'll have to dig around and see if I can't find the calculations on that.

I've done it on my 06.. Don't bother with it.. No mileage gain, and no performance gain..

Stock 2nd gen truck fans flow 8,800 cfm at full lock. Flex-a-lite are 5,500 cfm. This week it was pretty toasty here (92 F, 70% humidity), I was pulling a 3500 lb dump trailer into the wind with the a/c on wide open and that fan was locked and pulling LOTS of air through. (yes, I've cleaned the rad and moved the puke bottle)

My stock clutch went out, and it was tough finding one for a reasonable price so I got 2 16" fans from advanced auto, about 50 bucks each. I think they each flow 1800cfm or so and with a coolant flush and some water wetter they keep it below 190 with a camper in the bed with a small trailer behind it in almost 100* temps. Obviously they don't flow nearly as much air as the stock fan (with a clutch that works) but I ripped out the hood insulation and they seem to work just fine. Just on a switch so I can turn it on before it starts getting hot, seems to be the trick. A/C never worked so I yanked all that too, couldn't hurt.

Only problem was 2 fans wouldn't fit in the stock shroud, so I ripped it out and made a bracket out of 1""x1/8" aluminum angle stock. Total cost was about 120 or so and it works for me. Flex a lite or whatnot sounds better but I'm cheap.
