EGTs too low?

I'm kinda new to the diesel truck world but do have experience with small diesel & diesel tractors. I've been driving around lately with the O/D off & been getting interesting results.

First I'm getting about 1mpg better.

Second as my title states low EGTs.

I can cruz around at 40-45mph at ~450*. I only idle at ~400 in drive at a stop light. When I let the trans down shift to a stop I can bring EGTs down to 260*

One the good side I can barely get 1200* at full tilt up to 90mph.

I know that the lower the EGTs are the more efficient the engine is working.

Does anyone know if this is normal & I shouldn't worry?

I was planning getting a turbo & cam later, which will lower the EGTs also.

try to adjust the depth of the probe. you want it in the center of the exhaust flow. you may have it in too far and not getting an accurate reading. those temps for preturbo are too low. cruising will be around 550-650(ish) and max wot will approach 1400 pulling a hill stock.

I'll check the probe depth.

The interesting thing is that started happening a little over a week ago. Before it was about 100* higher when I was cruzin' & its been dropping. (I've had the Quad off for about the same amount of time.) But my acceleration EGTs where lower than they are now.

I don't know if this will make any difference, but I'm taking it in for what I believe is a leaking/cracked injector. My oil level is on the rise & I can get to almost 800* empty accelerating up to 60mph. (Before I was barley able to break 700* when the engine was cold.) But the interesting part is that at full throttle it can barley hit 1200*.

I'm able to get it to boost to 36psi & have it settling down to 29psi at full throttle runs. So I don't think it's a boost leak. At cruzin up to 55mph my boost gauge will be 0-1psi at 60mph it between 1-3psi.

Thanks again for the help... this one got me stumped.

Your results sound perfectly normal to me and match mine pretty well. What are you looking for? If the engine is not working hard the EGT will be very low. The lower the EGT the better the mileage. I'm always seeing how low I can keep mine.

FWIW, I have mine pre turbo and have noticed that when coming off an off ramp, or down a slight incline, the gauge shows less than 300*.
Iv checked the depth and its where it should be.
