Step up the bits little by little, vaccum out the shavings along the way, and youll be golden.

Many guys drop the turbo, cover it up, etc. Ive done two now on my truck without issue by just drilling and sucking out the tiny shavings. Obviously take each bit slowly, to minimize the shaving size, but I havent had any problems yet.

Yeah I dopped my turbo to install it, and boy that was a chore! Yeah if I were to do it again I would go stacked's way. Just use stepped bits to keep the shavings small and vaccum them and you will be fine. Good Luck.

It would be that last little push as the bit breaks through that would scare me...I'd be praying to the electrolux gods at that point.

Honestly, if you take your time and go slow, dont force it too much, the shavings are minimal. And even still, the shavings are still forced out by the bit turning, and the last push always sent those back out as well.

Ive done it on mine, twice, and I know other friends of mine have done it the same way with no issues...

tape over most of the tailpipe, and just before you break through, start it. with goggles on of course. the exhaust pressure will blow the chips out.

I left a little slit in the shape of an + in the tape too. Worked like a charm!

Thanks for the advice guys - I will be doing mine at some point in the near future.

Can anyone show a picture of the exact location where it needs to go?

Can anyone show a picture of the exact location where it needs to go?

Here is a pic of both of mine...(one for edge/attitude, one for guage)
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/data/500/pyros.jpg

The one up top measures cylinders 1-3, on the bottom side, 4-6(hottest reading), since the back cylinders run hotter than the front.
Id almost mount it in the collector portion like my bottom one, just so you see the hottest reading youre going to have.

I see in the pic where you put the probe, did I put mine in the wrong place which is farther toward the front of the truck? I thought the Commander pics showed it up there? I hope!

Just do not drill to close to the middle. There is a web there and the probe will not go all the way in. How do I know, I found out the hard way, luckly I was able to get a tap in there enough to cut some threads and plug it.

You know I ran a thermo reader on mine and they were all about 10 degrees of each other, that was at idle, may be different at WOT.

I installed mine last week.

If you install the probe at the 3rd cylinder, use a magnet that will fit through the hole to remove the chips that fall inside.

You can also use grease on the bit and the tap. That will hold most of the chips.

Theres kind of two "ribs" where you can pick either one to drill, like you said theres a divider in the middle of the "collector" area.

You mean the digital infared gun?
I may try that sometime to see, but under WOT I have differences in the 100* range, and idle/cruise, 50*

Yep! The Cummins is one heck of a big compressor[laugh]

hello,
does the probe have to be before the turbo or can it be after how much change in temerature would there be? thanks again dennis

the probe can be in either location. there will be about a 300* drop through the turbo.

On my 06 heres's where I put mine.....

No need to take the turbo off. Like others have said go slow and don't drill in that center web area. I was like a surgon out there.....I was drilling and my buddy was running the shop vac. Suction....more suction! I used a pencil magnet to get any chips that may have been left behind. When done drilling crank the eng over a couple of burps to get any last shavings out. Then spin the turbo by hand...with the eng off!! Just to make dam sure everything is clear.

What is so difficult about removing the turbo to be absolutely sure?

Not hard, just time consuming, and IMO, more work than you need to do.

Ive done it without dropping anything on two trucks, no issues.
Like I said earlier, just keep the shavings small, take your time, the quicker you try to push that bit in there, the larger the shavings are.

The bottom line though, it all comes down to preference, if someone feels the need to drop it, go for it, its your truck, your choice.

When I did my 04' I just had the engine running.. Even without blocking the pipe their is a buttload of pressure in front of the turbo.. I even ran the tap with the engine running(I had to wear a heavy glove though, dang exhaust was HOT!!).

Yes running the shop vac while drilling is good, then I got a straw and attached it to the end of the funnel connection of the shop vac and was able to vac out inside the hole.

if you drop the turbo do you need a new gasket or just reattach the idea of just drilling slow still freaks me out

How many size drill bits did you step up from?
