EGR Valve

I have a Kalifornia edition '96 12v motor with the EGR valve. Is there any advantages to removing it and blocking it off? Any gains in HP or MPG? No smog inspections to worry about, so any input?? ???

The CA EGR Intake has a much smaller diameter air passage than a non-EGR intake. By only blocking the EGR air you have reduced the total volume of air to the motor (even though its dirty exhaust). I tested this on my motor and my exhaust temps were higher that with the EGR functioning. You can buy a non-EGR intake from Cummins #3931516 that was the # for my 96. I have'nt got around to picking this up yet so I have no results for you. I know my oil would'nt get full of suit as fast.

I ditched mine. Unbelieveable amount of soot on the grid heaters (gone too now) and in the intake. The intake or connector tube as Cummins calls it, chokes down to about the diameter of a quarter where the EGR venturi is.

Yes, the egr is a bad thing with diesels. Clogs the egr and the intake. Same problem as on my VW diesel. The best fix for the mighty Cummins is to replace intake with a non egr unit like suggested.

You can always clean it and then run biodiesel in your tank, b-100 on an occasional basis or something like b-20 on a regular basis. This WILL clean the junk out of there.

It's a shame they force an egr on a diesel. It kills the motor over long term due to the problems described. Seems like they could come up with something better to meet emissions.

Ok, well then..... What about just plumbing a filter fresh air line instead? Like on some of the older car and all motorcycle applications. (Trying to save some $$$)

No answer yet to my last question. Anybody?? ???

I talked to a friend of mine who is a diesel mechanic about this topic. He thought that just blocking it off would be ok, but wasn't that familiar with Dodges, just Cummins in commercial applications, which don't have this problem. He did agree that this whole EGR thing needs to go away to make it run right and last longer.

I sent you an email regarding the egr question. I think blocking it off (like using a piece of sheet metal between gaskets) will solve the problem, but you might get a check engine light. Let me check a few things out first.

Can you be a little more specific to the venting with a hose idea? Hope somebody with a little more knowledge will chime in and be able to give you more specific info. Good luck, Kevin

If you only block the egr off either at the exhaust manifold or at the egr itself you will reduce the total volume of air into the motor. Your exhaust temps will be higher this way. Insted user the non-egr intake from cummins and remove the egr hose (runs from exhaust manifold to intake) and place a block off plate over the exhaust manifold from which you removed the hose. You can use a new gasket as a template for creating this block off plate.

You will see 175 degree reduction in temps,rev's easier and runs smoother.About 1 to 2 mpg increase.Great mod.It makes you wonder what good a intercooler does with egr.Don't you just love CALI. :
