Educate me!

Ok so Ive had 1st gen 12 valves since forever ago and now Ive got a son so I got me a 99 ex cab. I just wanted to know what what the different options were like as far as hp and torque numbers, trans options, and anything else important yall think I should know.

Also I heard something about an early 99 model and a late, whats the difference?

I will probably want too put a programmer on it sometime but right now I just want too take care of my trans..........input on how to take of my trans and what is the best programmer and chip?

I believe 98 was the half, year, between 12v and 24v, never heard the thing about 99 having a half year deal. Fuel pressure gauge is important, you VP44 will be alot more prone to failure then the p7100. I would make sure all maintenance was up to date before modding.

What about stock horsepower and torque numbers? And any input on tranny maintenance and prgrammers would be appreciated.

Also when I bought the truck it was goin in out of overdrive and the owner disconnected a battey that he said had a dead cell and was causing the problem and it cleared up after that, anything else I should know bout the issue?

The overdrive issue is usually a bad ground. Has the trans had any work, 205K miles is a lot on an auto that has towed a lot.

Should be 235 hp and 500 some odd pounds of torque. I don't think the HO's came out till 2000, which got you ten more horses and 45 more lbs torque IIRC.

The SO vp44's are better to get more hp out of. The HO's are limited.

An Edge EZ is usually pretty good and affordable. Its a 3 position upgrade. Don't forget a full 4" exhaust and a fuel pressure and pyro gauge to keep you in the loop.

The trans seems fine and has not been rebuilt as far as I know. Any advice on how to strengthen my trans and make it last as long as possible?

Does anybody know anything about the BD-Power PressureLoc Transmission Kit? Also thinkin about a deep pan

The only way to really strengthen the auto's is to put billet parts in it, and a stronger converter, which constitutes a whole rebuild and about $5000.00!

Changing the fluid out at regular intervals helps as does a larger cooler and more fluid.

I do not know anything about the BD power thing.

From 1998.5 - 2000 you had to possible power outputs

In 1998.5 the Cummins was upgraded to ISB (interact system B series) the manual trans version was rated at 235 hp at 2700 rpm and 460 ft-lbs at 1600 rpm. The auto was rated at 215 hp at 2700 rpm and 420 ft-lbs at 1600 rpm. Both came with the VP44 pump.

The edge ez is a nice programmer i had one on my 05 2500 but i upgraded to the juice w/ attitude, However as you start to add programmers you need to up the lift pump output i recommend FASS or Airdog. The Edge ez installed in like 10 min it has two connections to the engine this tuner is a "piggy back" style it modifies the inputs to your factory computer. The juice with attitude is a little more in depth.

Your transmission should be a 47 RE this is a good trans but i have found if you start increasing line pressure you bend the stock band strut, also the accumulator piston is plastic in this trans a billet accumulator is the way to go. This web site has a lot of good trans stuff. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm
By adding a deep quart trans pan you will increase the life of the trans but if you add a deep pan get a finned pan this can help to bring temp down 20 degrees also you may need to get a filter extension depending on how deep the pan is that you buy.

Now as far as the torque converter is concerned triple disk is the way to go but if you drop the tranny to change the converter you might as well build the trans because the greater holding power and torque multiplication of the triple disc will wear on the worn out internal clutches of your trans.

Sorry i dont know the transfer case.
Good luck brother.

It is worth just building the trans. Little things help longevity on a stock truck but don't do much with any kind of hp mods. Most important thing on a 24v is going to be an upgraded lift pump or fuel system like a FASS. Guages are a must as well. The edge juice w/ att. runs great in these trucks.

Constantly, it has a return line back to the tank. If I remember right my Fass ran 17-18 psi idle and 13-14 wot.
