Just ordered an Edge Ez for my '05. I keep hearing people talking about the watching the EGT's. What are EGT's? This is my first diesel so I am completely lost. Do I need to install a EGT guage?

EGT=exhaust gas temp

If you run the temps too high for too long, you will melt the top of the pistons.

Anytime you add mods, a set of gages is good idea. Besides that, they look pretty cool.

If egt, boost, and fuel pressure are so important then why doesn't the manufacturer install them from the factory? By the way, what is boost and fuel pressure?

Welcome to your new favorite pastime. My advice for now is do not install an EZ without gauges. You can fry your pistons and turbo before ya know it.

To answer your question about why doesn't the manufacturer install all these gauges....it's a the additional cost and they set-up the engine to run within safe parameters stock. You start moddin' things out, you should be prepared to be your own warrenty company.

Cirus whoever sold you the ez should of notified you of this but stock trucks need guage's it is a safeguard at the minimum a pyro guage although it is nice to have boost and trans temp or fuel pressure if you have a manual and the Di Procol are a good match for your existing guage's. I feel the same way about the manufacture should sell the trucks with the guage's the only problem with that would be accuracy most trucks read 40lbs of oil pressure when the truck is not running My fuel guage drops below E but I still have 5 gallons in a 35 gallon tank

About the warranty. I know the EZ can be removed in about 2 minutes. If I were to remove it before taking it to the dealership is there anyway they can tell that I'v had a box on it? Will the computer show anything if they hook up to it? I ask this because this truck is not only going to be my daily driver but my work truck also so I intend to have it for a long time that is why I bought the extended warranty. Would I be better off just leaving the truck stock for safety sake? I want the extra power and mileage but not if I am going to have to work on it myself.

Good question, but if you don't modify the truck it is rare that you need to worry about EGT's The EZ box you ordered changes the stock paramiters so you need to monitor what is going on under the hood closer.

If you are going to modify the truck then YOU need to take responsibility for what you do to it. If it the warranty is voided by something you did then so be it. You did it by modifying the stock paramiters for the truck beyond where the manufacturer says its safe to run the truck.

On the other hand, if you are not towing and just want more zip inbetween stop lights chasing Powerjokes, Duramins knockyourself out. Chances are you won't have a problem, but if you do take responsibility for what you did, thats all I'm saying.

600 #'s of torque is pretty healthy on its own man, try running her for 30K miles without mods before you bomb a new truck. These engines don't even break in until 50K. IMHO.

Boost is the pressure the turbo pushes into the cylinders. The EZ box "fools" the computer into thinking there is less boost so the turbo makes more than stock.

Fuel pressure is the life blood of a diesel. Not only does it feed the engine, because there is excess flow to the engine (which is returned to the fuel tank) it also cools and lubricates the lift and injector pump.

You may want to search the web site for other basic info also. There are many expert opinions on this site that will be very helpful for you to better understand what is going on under the hood.

go ahead and get it. i wont have gauges for another couple weeks, so i just run the edge on level 1 or 2 and im not going to run it too hard to blow the motor. I only tow light, 3000lbs, but level one will be fine with me towing. we have an 03 555HO/Auto with an edge box on the MAXIMUM setting. my step dad tows 15,000# with that truck all the time without a problem. The box has been on for 70,000 miles and not one problem. he doesnt have gauges and he doesnt let the truck cool before turning it off

Cirus, check out BD-Power.com, they make a sweet 'X-Monitor', instead of old fashioned gauges, this one is digital, and looks sweet. It comes with Pyro (EGT), Trans, and Turbo monitors. It's only $150 Cdn.

I think your pricing is wrong. I look at BD site and the are $499 to $599 Cdn. You might want to double check.

I was told that there is no way the dealer or anyone can tell if you had a ez box hooked up. the truck computer has no way of telling

The only thing you have to worry about is the boost elbow. After you take the EZ off and don't change the boost elbow, if you run your truck hard it will throw a over-boost code, and they can see that the factory clamp is not on the wastegate hose.
