Easy and cheap mods for an 04?

I just bought a 04 cummins 600 and was wondering if there were any "cheap" mods to do untill i can do my homework on aftermarket parts to give my truck a little more power. I have heard of people drilling the air boxes to allow more air in. Is there anything else?

Well....I am new to this diesel thing but, I know there is some things that you can do as a free mod like modifying the airbox, removing the silencer in the turbo and the baffles in the elbow.
Which by the way if anyone has pictures of doing that then please post them.

I am going to loose the muffler next week and remove the silencer in the turbo and baffles today.

Anything else to help make the turbo spool faster? The truck seems gutless off the line without stalling the truck up.

Well for about 325.00 you can get a new intake with a power elbow, taking of the muffler won't really help in HP department but will help a little with EGTS. I noticed the biggest difference when I gutted the cat, but I also put on a 18" magnoflow muffler and its been great.

What about just taking the silencer off the turbo and gutting that tube that has that plastic inside it crossing each other to allow a straight through path from the airbox to the turbo and adding a K&N filter? Makes sense.

So is yours a 2500 or 3500???
The cheapest mod I can think of now would be to take the 2 off and install a 3 and make it a 3500

Silencer ring and gutting the intake tube only makes NOISE.no real improvement in power or anything else. Not really any CHEAP mods that do much on the newer trucks.I'd stay away from K&N not many diesel folkes use them.Lots of threads about poor filtering.

I second the call to stay away from K&N.

Also, I found it far easier to buy a replacement tube for the stocker with baffles in it. Geno's carries a shiny fancy one called the Elimination Tube or something like that. I bought it, and it swaps out nice and quickly. Also, I have the original sitting on the bench if I ever had to put it back in.

A trip to the hardware store may even cost less. PVC would work just as well.

I third the K&N filter, even tho i have a 2nd gen, my turbo was eaten up by the stuff the K&N let in. Not to mention you have to oil it. You can never get the oiling right either,

Goodies for 3rd gen

I plan on putting some better filteration on the intake and installing a Banks high ram intake that I removed from my 99 when I traded it off. A new Pac brake is coming soon I think. Other than that warranty rules the day.

So which filter is the best to use?

I am not going with a CAI i just want a replacement filter seeing that since i removed the silencer and baffles it is straight through to the turbo. I know the accordian looking elbow may hurt it a little but not enough to justify the expense.

Also i guess i am going to buy a power pup and be done.

I mainly drive the truck on the highway empty and pull a horse trailer on the weekends so i don't need to get to radical.

The only 2 drop in filters I would reccomend are the AMSOIL and Ture Air filters. they are both mutli desity foam filters that yes are oiled but filter much better than K&N and other guaze typ filters.

Of course I just opened up a can of contriversy but who cares
