Dually to Single

I may have asked this before... actually, many people may have asked this before but I don't remember. (The mind is the second thing to go!)

We have a 98.5 dually and we really don't need the rear duals anymore as we carry nothing heavy. I'm probably wrong, but I can't see why Chrysler would use 2 different axles between the single rear wheel models and the duallies when a different hub would achieve the same end result.

Anyone here ever convert from one to the other or know if a hub/brake drum assembly swap would work to get me back to a single rear? I just had the front end all apart to change rotors, and that looks like I could take off the hub adapter to get the front end back to conventional rims, but I hate the thought of swapping rear ends.

Thanks!

chaikwa.

i'm buying a frame and axles from a junk yard and it is a dually with 60/80 axles. i'm putting the axles in my 97 2500 5-sp. i have 4.10's and the dually has 3.54's. the front looks like the spacer will just come off and the studs look just like mine and the rear is the same with as my 80 so it should swap right in. don't know if there were a difference in the brake drums i converted mine to disc years ago because mine rear drums wouldn't stay adjusted and would wear out my front disc's and warp the rotors. hope this helps

I'm interested in this too. Why not just remove the outer wheel; the tracking and the rims are the same as far as I can tell? But if I can do that I will get Ricksons and truck tires to handle weight.

The rear of the dually is just slightly wider. We converted one and you had to look twice to notice the differnce. The rear actually sits about even with the front now. He is running 10" wheels which really stick out front and back, but if you ran 8" wheels or even stock wheels, it should look really nice. For the front end, just pull the adapters off and you are set. He found a black bed to match and broke even when he sold his bed, wheels and tires.
