Driveshaft(s) Removal

Yeh, another vibration thread. My truck went in for the 70MPH vibration problem, they rotated and balanced the tires, said the driveshafts were OK, and sent me on my way. Still has the exact same vibes.

Two Questions:

1. Is the truck still driveable with the front shaft removed?

2. How is the rear shaft removed on the front side? Is it a splined shaft that slides out once the rear bolts are removed?

I think I will get each balanced separately on my own. It's only about $50 each, and it beats going in many times to the dealer to get nothing done, and waste almost half a day.

Yes the truck is still driveable with the front shaft removed. You will need an extended 6" T-40 torx bit to remove it from the front yoke. Also mark the shaft and yokes with paint and replace the same way they came off. Don't know about the back, have'nt done that one yet but I would say it is splined.

You might want to try just putting a standard hose clamp on the drive shaft. I have read several posts where guys swear it helps.

Also, I just added ceramic beads to my tires and it took out all but the slightest vibration. I highly recommend it.

This morning I got the front shaft off and drove the truck -- same exact vibration. So, possibly it's the rear shaft. Was hoping it was the far lighter shaft!

May try the previously suggested hose clamp theory on the rear shaft.

I tried that before the front shaft removal, and it helped a little, I think, but not enough for me. Tomorrow, hose clamp, etc.
