Don't wearout my truck?

A guy at work told me that I should buy a small truck to commute to work and only use my Dodge when I do my sidejobs (masonry). "You don't need to drive this gas guzzler besides, how long is it going to last anyway?" I said I'll stick to my big truck. Rich

Unless your driving a rabbit truck the mpg probally ain't going to be good enough to justify doing that. I'm beating a guy at work with an s10 by 5mpg with my 93. Myself I use my 1993 but also have a 1980 rabbit 4dr that I have been using to bring the fuel bill down when I don't need the big rig. Use it up, Wear it out(if you can ).

I use my diesel Rabbit Truck for loads under 1200# (have hauled 1500#, not smart) it does have a transplanted 1.9 and will be getting a turbo this summer as we plan to move to higher altitude. It only gets 42-44 Mpg, so I question whether it is worth the 'sandwich' risk. It is really uncomfortable to travel in, so I limit my trips to 500 miles. (It needs a 'crew-cab', which I have a friend who made one from a 4 dr rabbit )

My '93 CTD seems to be happy with heavy loads and is much easier on the 'risk' factor. The cell phone chatting SUV's worry me in the rabbits since we've been hit 3 times in the last yr. Now as far as giving up my '97 Passat, I don't think so, it is pretty nice to go 1000 miles between fillups (need extra capacity bladder)

Haha, a buddy of mine made a comment to me the other day that I needed to get a truck like his (2wd Nissan) so I wouldn't spend so much on fuel.
Then I explained how i got pretty dang close to his mileage, and possibly better (he has no idea what he gets, but my 4wd Nissan on 33's aint great).
He then proceded to argue with me for 20-30 minutes about how that was not possible.

I laughed at him.

I have a few trucks, and the one which i am daily driving seems to be in the best order. (most attention) although i would trust any one of them to take me cross country, If you drive it all the little things get taken care of!!
I work with several guys which drive small pick ups, They all drive them because of gas prices, A chevy s-10, a couple of ford rangers, old and new, 2+4 wheel drive, Jeep wagoneer, Mini blazer ect, I get better fuel economy than ony of them , and that is with a full length ladder rack on the '89.

After I bought my '90, I had considered keeping my '99 S-10 ZR2, but considering it gets 3-4 MPG less than the Dodge, is less fun to drive, doesn't make cool sounds, and ya can't do near as much with it, I can't justify keeping it. Now it is for sale.

I do get a kick out of people when they think out of their butts and tell you about your "gas guzzler".

When my dad passed away about a 1.5 yeas ago I got two trucks and one car free and clear. 2004 Chevy 2500HD loaded, leather, heated seats, bose, & the 6.0 liter gas motor, 1996 impala SS LT1 350, and the 1993 Dodge CTD. The CTD gets better mileage then all the others (my right foot contributes to the Impala's poor mileage but still above 20). I sold the 12 MPG 2500, paid off the wifes van, and have put the remaining funds into rebuilding the Dodge & the Impala. The Impala didn't need much but standard 100K mile stuff. Leaving the remainder for the Dodge. See pictures in my gallery for updates buckstop bumper pictures added, new box pictures added!

different comment...I've got 280,000 km's on my diesel, but I've owned gasser's with 4-500,000 km's on them.still own '64 wagon with 140,000 miles on it.My complant is why do some people think just because there vehicle gets 3 years old,it's considered "worn out".What's the harm in doing a bit of maintance and keep the truck for life.JMO

Ppl often think i lie about fuel milage, but truth is my last fill up was 22.8 with a 3 speed auto, i got 12 pulling my 450 dozer and a trailor. Now 12 dont sound great but you show me a gasser that can pull 24,000 lbs and get 12. My 87 checy got 16 empty and couldnt budge the trailor alone. Cummins is one amazing engine.

I think it is mostly fear of and/or inability to do maintenance. It's nothing to turn wrenches and do oil changes to folks like us who frequent these sites and share information to do our own work. But we are the vey small minority of drivers out there. The vast majority can't be bothered or don't care to do it for whatever reason and just want to have a relliable vehicle. So they keep buying new ones and keep the manufacurers in business.

People constantly ask what I use the "big dually" for. I tell them an everyday driver. I have the safety and intimidation factor of an old full size pickup and the MPGs of a midsize car, maybe not quite (19-22). Inusrance is cheaper, I can replace anything on the side of the road in record time (ask bgilbert about my radiator swap in <30min on the side of I70 at 1am). I just get blank stares after the MPGs. That or they call me a liar. I offer to let them take a trip with me to verify, but so far no one has taken me up on it.

Oh, it IS possible to wear out the truck, but the engine needs lots more time and work to wear out.

You can buy a lot of diesel for a big Dodge pickup with the money a hospital visit costs, when you get in a wreck it one o' them lil toy cars.
