Does this TQ converter look any good

I was looking for some parts and I noticed that is has a lot of the same features as the really expensive ones. I read that it is tig welded instead of furnace brazed because it is stronger. Is that anything to worry about. Please let me know what you think

thanks
nathan

Good for 650 ft lbs of torque!!
Wow, that number is hard to reach!!!! Just kidding.
That is only 300 hp with the cummins, pretty close to stock, a single mod and you are there slipping it.

Tig welding the fins may very well weaken them with stress fractures. Whether or not its better doesnt matter much since the clutch isnt any better than the factory unit.

so basically what you are saying is the part of it is upgraded but the part that is acually the weakest is stock hardware. Is that what you are saying

thanks

Its a rebuilt stocker... and for that price they arent doing many upgrades, if any.

Time to cut, weld, and replace internals... $300 doesnt add up to much.

It has extra wide lock -up clutch. The stock converter has enough clutch area to hold even up to 800+hp if set up correctly. That isn't a big issue. They just rate it at or near stock numbers.
IMO, street trucks don't need more clutch area as in tripple or 5 clutchs. If you want that much more I guess it is ok but the input shaft pays a price.!!!

So on a stock tranny what is the weakest link. From what I can tell it is either the valve body which can be fixed for $60 or the input shaft which is about $600.

while we certainly admire your optimism about stock tranny's being upgradable for 660 dollars, the reality of it is like this.......

People wouldnt be spending 2800 - 5800 for transmissions from DTT, Goerand, HTS, Suncoast, etc if the 660 bucks worth of mods would do it. Dream on.

I understand that part but I also know that there alot of people that buy stuff by name brand. Practical or not. Some people want to have the best. practical or not. I wanted to know if this was an upgrade or a simple twist of facts to sell some tourqe converter. And I have got the answer that I am looking for before you chimed in with your expert post.

thanks for the help

All depends what you want... If you plan on keeping your truck stock and pulling light loads it might be worth a try. If you plan on bombing I'd look else where. IMO

I already have 6" lift, tuner and my boat it around 6000 and my dad had a camper at around 7000. So i am looking at semi heavy pulling. I dont think that I will do it to much but I dont want to be on the edge so I think i will stick to what everyone said and just get a known good one.

thanks

LMAO!!! Ever heard the saying "more money than brains"??

The reality is a $600 converter and a shift kit will serve 90% of the people and usage these trucks see.

Choosing the right parts is extremely important.

IMHO the weakest link in the factory 48re is the poor efficiency of the TC. Its setup so that grocery getters will not overheat the tranny in stop and go traffic but when pulling anything the TC slips so bad that you can actually tack out the engine and still not have the tranny running at enough rpm's to shift into the next gear. The factory lockup clutch is ok for a while but towing with even a little more than factory HP it will start to slip , mine took a year but it did happen. IMHO a TC upgrade so a more efficient unit with a lower stall and valve body is a well worth while upgrade to the tranny, but still cost a lot more than $600. AFIK TC's used in our trucks are the most expensive on the market and buying from an unknown vendor may save you some money, or it may cost you a lot more if the TC doesnt perform any better than the factory unit. NO amount of brazing or welding is going to change how the factory turbines perform.

ok thanks. Now i see that everyone that is writing in has billet input shaft. Is that a very weak part. I know that if you start getting a bad TQ converter the punished part is going to be the inputshaft. But can it take pulling 8000 lbs. I dont do it but like 2 -3 times a year. But I dont want a vaction ruined because this piece broke and I have to get it replaced on before I can vacate.

Thanks
nathan

I think it depends on how you drive and how the valve body is setup. My goerend setup shifts about like the factory tranny did when it was brand new, but I will say after a year and about 8000miles of towing my 10,000lb trailer the factory tranny was shifting like mush, most of the mushiness came from the TC lockup though. Other companies valve body's might shift a lot harder and that could break the input. I probably could have used the original tranny for a while(Dave recommeded I do just that) but I decided just to do the whole thing and not have to mess with it for a long time. I would call Dave at Goerends and let him know what you want out of your tranny, he wont try to sell you more than you need.
