Does stock truck need pyrometer?

Does stock truck need pyrometer?
I tried searching for this but kept getting a memory overflow error? I would like to know if a stock 2002 truck needs a pyrometer? Is it possible to get the EGT high enough to damage something? It is the truck in my signature... Stock except Fass HPFP and aftermarket muffler... Thanks!

I don't see why it would other then for peace of mind. Other then maybe towing up some extreme hills with weight but even then I would rather worry about an auto's tranny temp then egt's.

the H.O. is more susceptible to high EGT on a stock truck than the S.O., but i'd rather know than guess! a nice combo boost/EGT gauge will provide info if you are worried about space for gauges...

I had my pyro on my truck with just exhaust and air intake for acouple weeks and any hill steep enough for it to get above 1000 or so was to steep to stay in OD, so i would see no need. That was on an auto though, might beable to get things more toasty in a 5spd.
now with heavy plate movement/grinding those temps aint so cool any more.

Egt temp is more vital than tranny temps! you can melt an engine quicker than a tranny.
My dodge truck has been modded from stock pretty much from the first week I got it, my experience has been (other diesels) that even in stock form under certain load conditions you CAN put the engine under enough stress to destroy it, most stock diesels are under fuelled, but with enough load/hill it can exceed safe EGT temps rather quickly, again I cannot vouch for cummins inparticular, but others I can.

Personally, I want to constantly monitor fuel pressure, turbo boost, EGTs, and tranny temp. Once you get a baseline, even on a stocker, you can tell if something starts going bad....
