Dodge injector fight Part 3 or 4 or 5...

Well here is the latest on my ongoing injector fight with Dodge. About a month ago the dealership pulled all the injectors and wire brush cleaned them then performed a injector cleaning procedure on the truck. This did help with the smoke and rough starts. It reduced the amount of smoke and the length of time it smokes and runs rough by 50%. The issues have been gradually getting worse since then. However one thing I have noticed is now that it is getting colder on mornings when my heater grid cycles there is almost no smoke at start up.

I returned the truck to the dealer with the statement that the truck still smokes excessively and is slowly getting worse. They kept the truck for 3 days and returned it to me with the statement that rough idle and smoke is acceptable for 1 minute at start and nothing is wrong with the truck. I find it odd that dodge and the dealer both agreed there is a problem with the injectors when they said it was my fault because the idle time was too high and I was not working the truck hard enough. Now that the idle time is in the acceptable range suddenly this is "normal" operation???

So here is my question…..

The dealership is willing to buy back the truck and put me in a new 06. They are going to call me in 2 days with the numbers.

1. Am I being to picky about the smoke, rough idle, low power, intermittent loud pinging?
2. If I trade should I get another diesel or should I go back to a gasser?
3. Should I consider keeping the truck and installing aftermarket injector tips?
4. Is there an option of taking the truck to Cummins? Will they do warranty work?

Try the tone wheel mod as a experiment. I would like to know if it fixes your issue with the injectors.

Smokewise and pingingwise, I think you're being to picky. You should buy a gasser if these 2 things are that important. Or wait until 2007.

If you are seeing decreased performance, fuel economy, and crappy idle then I wouldn't put up with it either.

I'm impressed that you have stuck this out.

I would get in a Mega Cab, however, it's the same fuel system as the truck you have now. Maybe you'll get a good one this time. Maybe Mega gasser.

Aftermarket Injector tips will only get you worse fuel economy and increased black smoke unless they are stock.

Cummins Distributors are authorized to do Dodge truck service work on Cummins engines if the dealer authorizes it.

Cleaning with a wire brush will most likely NOT clean out the small injector holes. The outside surface may be clean, but the hole can still be fouled. You would need to look at injector spray pattern on a test stand to really know that they were clean.

I have not troubleshot your truck , but you would think they would just replace all six injectors and be done with it , and not end up with a lemon law truck. if they feel that your truck should smoke at start up. tell them you would contact EPA and find out if they feel the same way you wont find a Cummins distributor that will work on the 3 rd gen that I know of. and it would be Dodge paying for it if they have the ok from Star.

Hmmm - I've had a little bit of white smoke and a slightly rough idle at startup since I bought my truck, and it's garage kept at night. I start it, let it idle for about 10 seconds (running a little rough) and then increase the idle to about 1100 rpms for about 15 seconds, and then let it return to 750 rpm idle. It's smooth after that, and no smoke.
